Primary school admissions in Da Nang: Pressure on new urban areas

GD&TĐ - The "hot spot" for primary school enrollment in Da Nang City has shifted from schools in the center to schools in new urban areas.

Use department room as classroom

Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School (Hoa Khanh, Da Nang ) plans to use 3 department rooms and a council room as classrooms in the 2025-2026 school year. Next school year, the school will enroll 14 6th graders, an increase of 4 classes compared to the previous school year. This is data surveyed from all 3 sources: Universal survey results, list of primary school graduates in the school's enrollment area and data on residency status provided by the police.

Mr. Bui Duy Quoc - Principal of Nguyen Binh Khiem Secondary School, said: "In previous years, the school only used the results of the universal survey. This year, the unit is proactive in developing an enrollment plan. To have enough classrooms, the school temporarily converted the functions of 3 subject rooms to classrooms. Equipment and practice tools must be packed in boxes and scattered in empty rooms such as the library, the Team room, the office...".

Two secondary schools in Hoa Khanh ward, including Luong The Vinh Secondary School, Ngo Thi Nham Secondary School and Nguyen Luong Bang Secondary School (Lien Chieu), are all overloaded with classes because the number of students entering the first grade is much higher than the number of 9th graders graduating.

According to Mr. Huynh Duy Linh - Principal of Nguyen Luong Bang Secondary School, based on statistics, the school is expected to enroll 14 new 6th graders for the 2025-2026 school year and in fact, the number of students applying for admission is enough to arrange for 13 classes, reducing 1 class. For those who have not enrolled, the school has contacted to get information in order to complete the enrollment work before July 1. Accordingly, some students have moved back to their hometowns with their parents or are no longer residing in the area.

Previously, in June 2025, the Department of Education and Training of Lien Chieu District (old) in developing the enrollment plan proposed to regulate the new enrollment of 6th grade students in the direction of inter-residential and inter-locality to ensure enough places to study. Students of Hoa Khanh Bac and Hoa Khanh Nam wards were transferred to neighboring secondary schools such as Le Anh Xuan, Dam Quang Trung, Luong The Vinh...

Accepting students from outside the district to maintain scale

Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School (An Khe, Da Nang) enrolls 13 classes with 520 students, an increase of 3 classes compared to the previous school year. However, the total number of students entering grade 6 in the ward is 625. Therefore, Thanh Khe District (old) allows students in groups 72 to 90 to apply to study at Phan Dinh Phung Secondary School or Nguyen Dinh Chieu Secondary School.

For some primary schools with limited recruitment resources because the ward has 2-3 schools at the same level such as Le Lai, Phan Thanh (Hai Chau, Da Nang), it is possible to develop a plan to recruit students from neighboring areas who want to study at the school. Those who are in the "expanded recruitment" category of Phan Thanh Primary School are recruited to Trung Vuong Secondary School after completing the primary school program. Similarly, students in the expanded recruitment category of Le Lai Primary School, when they reach grade 6, are recruited to Nguyen Hue Secondary School.

Meanwhile, schools in new urban areas such as Le Dinh Chinh Primary School (Hoa Cuong) or Tran Dai Nghia Primary School (Hoa Xuan) have all "broken down" in the first-grade enrollment because the number of students enrolling has increased much more than the assigned quota. The number of first-grade students completing the enrollment procedures at Tran Dai Nghia Primary School has exceeded 600 students. Le Dinh Chinh Primary School, although the enrollment quota for first-grade students is only 322 students, by July 7, the number of students entering the class had reached 444 students, exceeding the expected number by about 3 grades.

To have enough classrooms and arrange teachers, Le Dinh Chinh Primary School plans to rearrange the number of students in grade 2 for the 2025-2026 school year. Accordingly, a grade 2 class will be split into two other classes.

“To avoid students feeling too much disruption in the first days of school, we do not divide students into classes but into groups, 2 groups are assigned to a new class. These classes will increase the number of students to a maximum of 40 students/class. The remaining 2nd grade classes will reserve some quotas to receive students transferred from Quang Nam (old) with their parents working in Da Nang”, Principal Huynh Thi Thu Nguyet informed, at the same time saying: The school has proposed to contract 1 more teacher to ensure teaching and learning activities in the next school year.

At Tra Nam Primary and Secondary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities (Tra Linh, Da Nang), the school extended the enrollment period throughout June and July. There were many cases of enrollment from July 1, parents updated their place of birth according to the name of the new commune, so when entering it into the system, it did not match. In addition, because the new commune after the merger has 2 primary schools and 2 multi-level schools, parents have a choice and do not accept enrollment clusters as before.

According to Principal Vo Dang Chin, there are cases where the school is forced to discuss with both the school in the enrollment area and the People's Committee of the new commune to resolve the issue, avoiding disruption in the school's planning due to future boarding organization work.

Phu Dong Primary School (Hai Chau, Da Nang) used to be in a state of "broken battle" when recruiting students for the first grade, but in recent years, the number of newly recruited students for grade 1 is less than 35 students/class. Particularly, the number of students in the 2 additional French classes is less than 25 students/class.
