As the US races to assess the damage, a source close to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN that Ukraine has had to change and revise some of its military plans following the leak of important classified documents from the Pentagon.

CNN has reviewed 53 leaked documents, all of which appear to have been released between mid-February and early March.

One of the documents revealed that the US had been spying on Zelensky. Sources close to the Ukrainian president said this was not surprising, but officials expressed frustration and anger at the leak.

Operational plans: Leaked US intelligence reports say that in late February, President Zelensky “proposed launching attacks on troop deployment sites in Russia’s Rostov Oblast region using drones, as Ukraine did not possess the long-range weapons with the range necessary to mount an attack.

Signals intelligence also includes intercepted communications and is defined by the National Security Agency as “intelligence derived from electronic systems and signals used by foreign targets, such as communications systems, radars, and weapons systems.”

The intelligence could explain public statements by the United States that it is reluctant to provide Ukraine with long-range missile systems because of concerns that Kiev will use them to strike at Russian territory. However, Ukraine has previously pledged not to use the weapons provided by the United States to do so.

Ukraine's response: On his Telegram channel on Friday, Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Ukrainian President's Office, said he believed the leaked and public documents were not authentic, “had nothing to do with Ukraine's real plans” and were based on “a large amount of fictional information” disseminated by Russia.
