Ukrainian forces have made some progress in the south this week but have also suffered significant losses in equipment, a European official told Bloomberg .
He also said it was unclear whether Ukraine's recent activities were the spearhead of a major attack or an effort to target weaknesses in Russia's defenses.
On June 8, the commander of the Ukrainian Land Forces Olejsandr Syrskyi said on Telegram that their defensive operation continued smoothly, defeating the enemy's attempts to block it.
According to CNN, Mr. Syrskyi also released a video showing soldiers of the 77th Air Assault Brigade destroying a Russian tank.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that fierce fighting "continues on every square meter" in the Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka and Mariinka directions.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's 3rd Assault Brigade claimed on Telegram that it had pushed back Russian forces around Bakhmut; while the 5th Special Mechanized Brigade said the occupying forces were losing ground in an area of Bakhmut. CNN could not independently verify the claims.
