Nautilus is a gallery by artist Miguel Doura located 4,300m above sea level, on the Aconcagua mountain in Argentina. There, nature becomes art, in the style of the Post-Impressionist period.

Artist Miguel Doura paints at an altitude of several thousand meters

Miguel Doura was born in 1962 in Buenos Aires province (Argentina). He studied fine arts at the local Prilidiano Pueyrredón school. Since 2003, Miguel has been conquering the highest mountain in the Americas, Aconcagua, leaving behind his small house in the forest of Mar de las Pampas.

Painting the sky

Miguel initially climbed this rugged mountain, all out of a thirst for heights. However, while camping at Plaza de Mulas, 4,300m above sea level, he suddenly thought of what he could do there. Combining his passion for art with his admiration for Aconcagua, Miguel began to paint, inspired by the surrounding landscape. The temperature at that time of year was minus 25 degrees Celsius, often accompanied by fierce winds.

While camping, Miguel lives in complete isolation, barely using the internet. He says: "I often don't know what day of the week it is, but I know if there's going to be snow or a storm coming... I wake up in the morning in my sleeping bag, sometimes I can feel my breath freeze around me. If the weather permits, I sit on some of the chairs available outside and start drawing... from there I have a great view of the entire camp and the Aconcagua mountain." In an article about Miguel Doura, journalist Kristen Stephenson said, "Sometimes Miguel Doura forgets that he is on earth. He feels far away from any civilization. For him, painting is a kind of freedom, a moment of complete honesty. When they paint, they feel like they are in a bubble, separated from the outside world."

World record gallery

The gallery is called Nautilus , named by artist Miguel Doura after the fictional submarine in the 19th-century French novel by Jules Verne. Like the efforts that took place in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Miguel's annual art gallery has been arduous.

During his first few years camping on Aconcagua Mountain, fierce storms destroyed his tent, forcing Miguel to find a larger, more solid shelter to house his works. It was a tent with a large PVC “window” at one end. When he was inside the tent, looking out the window, he saw the snow falling outside and felt like the captain of a ship, reminding him of Jules Verne’s submarine Nautilus . Since 2010, Miguel Doura’s Nautilus art spaceship has held the Guinness World Record for “Highest Contemporary Art Gallery in the World.”

More than just the Nautilus Gallery

Although he is known as the “Painter of Aconcagua”, Miguel Doura’s work is varied, but almost always involves landscapes, mountains, forests or the sea. His paintings are characterized by a Fauvist style, influenced by Van Gogh, filled with colors with continuous additions. Miguel mainly uses oil pastels as a medium, but also highlights his work with graphite or oil paints to express surrealism with large areas of color. And of course, he is also a painter of postmodernity.

Miguel has painted in Ushuaia (Argentina), the southernmost city in the world, in the North Cape of Norway… In addition to painting, Miguel Doura is also an art photographer, whose images have appeared in Argentine and foreign publications, including illustrations for postcards, calendars, magazines and books on various topics.

Some pictures of artist Miguel Doura's activities

Every year, visitors from all over the world come to visit Miguel Doura’s “unique” gallery. They come from Alaska, South America, Europe, and the Kamchatka Peninsula… They admire Miguel’s post-impressionist paintings, from charcoal drawings to oil paintings.

Among the visitors to the gallery was NASA astronaut Dominic L. Pudwill Gorie, who completed four missions to the ISS from 1998-2008 and received three NASA Space Flight Medals during his astronaut career. Gorie left with Miguel’s painting, which is an unforgettable memory for the artist. Miguel Doura is happy to see any tourists who visit the Nautilus Gallery and is happy to take souvenir photos with all of them.
