In Russia, a series of cases of mysterious virus suddenly appeared, causing high fever and coughing up blood - Photo: URA NEWS
In recent days, Russia has recorded an unidentified virus that causes infected people to cough up blood and have a high fever for weeks, with some patients even having a fever of up to 39 degrees Celsius.
Russian authorities have yet to compile statistics on the number of patients infected with the new virus or the number of hospitalized patients.
According to Lenta news site and medical sites, some medical experts predict that this could be an outbreak of pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma bacteria. Previously, in December 2024, Russia had recorded an outbreak of pneumonia caused by this type of bacteria.
There are many different types of Mycoplasma bacteria that cause infections in different areas of the human body such as the respiratory tract, reproductive system, urinary tract, etc.
Some symptoms of patients with pneumonia caused by Mycoplasma bacteria include runny nose, headache, sore throat, fatigue, and mild fever.
The patient then begins to have a higher fever, often above 39 degrees Celsius, with headaches and increased coughing. In children, this may be accompanied by diarrhea.
The symptoms of patients infected with the strange virus in Russia in recent times are similar to the symptoms of people infected with Mycoplasma bacteria.
According to the patients, they started with normal headaches but after a few days, the headaches increased to the point that they “couldn’t get out of bed”. The patients also had fevers of up to 39 degrees Celsius and coughed so hard that “tears came out”.
Speaking to Russian media, Alexandra, a person diagnosed with the mysterious virus, said that despite taking antibiotics for a week, her severe coughing continued, and she even coughed up blood.
She added that all her tests for COVID-19, influenza A and influenza B were negative.
In the medical records of patients like Ms. Alexandra, doctors only recorded that these patients had "acute respiratory viral infection" (ARVI).
Doctors also advise patients to take antibiotics and to call a doctor at home immediately if their condition worsens.
However, Russian doctors and health officials have yet to make any official statements regarding the recently recorded new cases.
Moscow health experts say they are still racing against time to determine what virus or bacteria is causing the strange illness, but say it is too early to draw conclusions about the cause of the outbreak.
