After the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that it had found potential evidence of signs of ancient microbial life on Mars, images believed to have been released by NASA have spread widely on social media.

On October 24, a Chinese post on Douyin wrote: "NASA has released the latest photos of Mars, 225 million kilometers away from Earth."

The post shared a video depicting a sandy planet captured by a rover with multiple objects framed in red and yellow.

The video also appeared in other posts on Douyin, TikTok, Instagram and X, in various languages including English, Portuguese and Urdu, after NASA scientists announced on September 10 that rovers had found "biological signatures" on Mars.

On October 31, AFP news agency reported that there are several rovers on Mars, such as Perseverance Mars, which has been on the Red Planet since 2021, searching for signs of life that could have existed millions to billions of years ago.

Remarkably, many social media users seem to believe that the viral video was actually filmed on Mars.

"Mars looks absolutely stunning in this video! The vast sand dunes and clear horizon are truly mesmerizing. It's incredible to think that we're witnessing such clear images from 140 million miles (225 million km) away. Thanks for sharing this glimpse of the Red Planet!" one comment read.

According to AFP, NASA has posted raw images from the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers on the agency's official website, but none of the images match the images in the viral video.

A reverse image search of the video's frames on Google led AFP to the earliest version of the video posted on Instagram, Threads and Facebook by the account "curiositydeepspace" on October 13.

While posts by "curiositydeepspace" also claim to be genuine NASA photos, the page descriptions all describe "curiositydeepspace" as a "digital content creator."

The owner of the account "curiositydeepspace" did not respond to AFP's request for comment on the viral video.

Additionally, the video also has visual inconsistencies, such as different shadow directions of some objects.

In short, the viral video is not the Mars image released by NASA .
