On June 6, at the United Nations headquarters in New York (USA), the Executive Board of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a dialogue with UN member countries to exchange lessons learned on overcoming crises and turning national aspirations into concrete results.
According to a VNA correspondent at the United Nations, on the occasion of the 45th anniversary of Vietnam-UN relations, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, was invited to be the keynote speaker at the session to share Vietnam's successful lessons. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang said the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed down economic development, aggravated many other challenges, making the task of recovering and maintaining stable economic development increasingly difficult. Global issues such as climate change, geopolitical tensions, epidemics, food and energy crises threaten national development strategies. In that context, the Vietnamese Government has implemented many measures to ensure people's health, effectively control the epidemic, not trading people's health for economic growth, and providing social security packages to support businesses, workers and vulnerable groups. With its vaccine diplomacy policy, Vietnam has increased access to multiple sources such as the COVAX Global Vaccine Access Program, the United Nations agency and international partners, thereby successfully implementing the largest vaccination campaign in history, ensuring that all people are fully vaccinated by March 2022. Regarding climate action, despite limited fiscal space, the Vietnamese Government still focuses on long-term development priorities, implementing international commitments including the commitment at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) on net zero emissions by 2050, mobilizing resources through the establishment of a partnership on a just energy transition in 2022 to mobilize 15.5 billion USD for climate action. Thanks to that, Vietnam has effectively recovered from the pandemic, with economic growth reaching 8.02% in 2022, the highest in the past 10 years, macroeconomic stability and effective debt management. The multidimensional poverty rate decreased by 1.2% compared to 2021 and Vietnam continued to be in the group of countries with a high human development index. This result comes from important lessons learned, which is national self-reliance, the government's main task is to protect and improve people's livelihoods and the environment by ensuring and maintaining political stability, ensuring macroeconomics, and social security so that no one is left behind. In addition, it is necessary to strengthen national internal strength and mobilize the participation of all social sectors, in parallel with mobilizing external resources through enhanced international cooperation, partnerships, foreign investment and free trade agreements. Equally important is to avoid spreading resources, but to focus on priority areas, and encourage the participation of the private sector to increase the scale and quality of finance for development. Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang also said that strengthening partnerships on the basis of mutual respect and sharing is an indispensable factor to achieve specific results in sustainable development, emphasizing that UNDP has been, is and will continue to be one of Vietnam's most important and reliable partners on the path of development and integration. At the meeting, representatives of UNDP and other countries highly appreciated the results that Vietnam has achieved in economic recovery after the pandemic, ensuring social security and responding to climate change through appropriate and timely policies, as well as sharing Vietnam's experience in building autonomy and independence on the path of development as well as in promoting close and effective partnerships with UNDP in various aspects of sustainable development.
