On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Mexico (May 19, 1975 - May 19, 2025), on May 30, Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel held a ceremony to place a plaque commemorating the location of the first Mexican Embassy in Vietnam.
The Mexican Embassy in Vietnam was located within the Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi Hotel from 1976 to 1980. The plaque installation is part of the extensive cultural diplomacy efforts of the Mexican Embassy and its partners to strengthen the relationship of friendship, understanding and mutual trust with Vietnam.
General Manager of Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, Mr. George Koumendakos emphasized the “specialness” of the plaque-laying ceremony taking place in 2025 - a major milestone marking 50 years of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Mexico, “not only to honor the past but also to reaffirm the common values of respect, cooperation and understanding between cultures”.
This plaque-posting event, according to Mexican Ambassador to Vietnam Alejandro Negrin, “opens a new chapter in the relationship between Mexico and Vietnam”, and is “proof that Mexico’s diplomatic activities in Hanoi have been present from a very early age and have guided the friendly relationship between the two countries”.
The Mexican diplomat affirmed that “the honoring of this special heritage at the Metropole, then the Thong Nhat Hotel, is a reminder of the diplomatic history of the two countries, and at the same time a commitment to maintaining the increasingly strong relationship between Mexico and Vietnam.”
