This is the result announced from the 2024 Global English Proficiency Index (EPI) report, byEducation First Vietnam (EF Vietnam) on November 13.
Specifically, Vietnam's English proficiency index this year reached 498 points, ranking 63rd out of 116 countries and territories assessed and in the low proficiency group. The No. 1 position this year belongs to the Netherlands (636 points), followed by Norway (610 points) and Singapore (609 points), in the very high proficiency group.
In terms of Asia, Vietnam ranked 8th, after Singapore (609 points), Philippines (570 points), Malaysia (566 points), Hong Kong - China (549 points), South Korea (523 points), Nepal (512 points) and Bangladesh (500 points).
By region and city within the country, no place in Vietnam is ranked as high or very high English proficiency. Five cities have average scores, respectively: Hanoi (524 points), Hai Phong (523 points), Ho Chi Minh City (523 points), Nha Trang (521 points) and Da Nang (516 points).

With this ranking result, Vietnam has ended a 2-year streak of English proficiency index of people rising to the average level. Previously in 2022, Vietnam had escaped the low English proficiency group when it reached 502/800 points, ranking 60th in the world , up 5 places compared to 2021. In 2023, Vietnam continued to increase 2 places, ranking 58/113.
EF Vietnam's report also shows that English proficiency is declining worldwide. This is the fourth consecutive year that global English proficiency has declined, with 60% of the countries in the rankings scoring lower than in 2023.
In addition, the report shows that the service, aviation, media, sports and entertainment industries are the industries with the highest English proficiency levels.
This is the world's largest survey of English skills by country and region, covering more than 110 countries and territories, and has been evaluated and ranked prestigiously worldwide, published annually since 2011.
This year's EPI is based on test results from 2.1 million non-native English speakers aged 18 and over in 116 countries and territories.
