(Dan Tri) - General Secretary To Lam emphasized that Vietnam is ready to participate in solving global issues such as maintaining peace, handling conflicts, promoting development, ensuring human rights, responding to climate change, etc.

On October 25, General Secretary To Lam received United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, on the occasion of the Secretary-General's official visit to Vietnam and attendance at the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime ( Hanoi Convention).

The General Secretary stressed that this visit by the UN Secretary General has special significance, taking place on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the founding of the UN (October 24, 1945) and the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day (September 2, 1945).

During that process, after 30 years of war and 20 years of embargo, from a poor country receiving aid from the UN, Vietnam has grown up, achieved very proud achievements and is trying its best for the common work, for peace , development and the interests of the people.

Affirming strong support for multilateralism with the UN playing a central role, the General Secretary stressed that Vietnam is well aware of its responsibilities and is ready to participate in solving global issues such as maintaining peace, handling conflicts, promoting development, ensuring human rights, and responding to climate change.

With a deep awareness of the value of peace, Vietnam supports the settlement of disputes and conflicts by peaceful means, in accordance with the UN Charter and international law.

The General Secretary asked the Secretary General to support Vietnam in participating more deeply in this field, especially in participating in UN peacekeeping activities in the context of unpredictable conflicts in the world.

Affirming that people are at the center of all policies, the General Secretary emphasized that Vietnam prioritizes stable, sustainable, long-term development, application of science, technology, innovation, digital transformation, environmental protection, and is ready to share experiences and support other countries in economic development, agriculture, health care, education, etc.

Thanking the UN and countries for their trust and support in Vietnam's membership of the Human Rights Council for two consecutive terms, the General Secretary said this is the clearest proof of Vietnam's commitments and achievements in ensuring the rights and interests of the people.

At the meeting, the UN Secretary-General expressed his confidence that under the leadership of General Secretary To Lam, Vietnam will achieve its major goals, including achieving double-digit growth in the coming years and having a more important role and voice in the international arena.

Considering Vietnam as a fundamental pillar of South-South cooperation and of a balanced, stable multipolar world order based on international law, the UN Secretary-General hopes that Vietnam will strongly support balanced reform of the UN, maintain development assistance activities, especially for developing countries, and oppose unilateral actions.

On international and regional issues, the two sides agreed on the need to strengthen solidarity, promote dialogue and cooperation to prevent conflicts and resolve disputes by peaceful means, on the basis of the UN Charter and international law.

General Secretary To Lam shared and appreciated the Secretary-General's good opinions and sentiments and affirmed that Vietnam is ready to join hands with the UN and the international community to build a world of peace, stability, fairness and sustainable development.
