Farewell to Music Researcher Dang Hoanh Loan

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem said that music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan passed away at the age of 82, after nearly two years of fighting stomach cancer.

He passed away at 2:15 a.m. on June 3. His funeral will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. on June 5 at the Cau Giay District Funeral Home, Hanoi . The memorial service and funeral will be held at 9 a.m. the same day. His body will be buried at Thien Duc Cemetery Park.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi My Liem (Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Music Association) emotionally said: "Every time I go to Hanoi, I visit him. He is a person who has contributed a lot to the Institute of Music (a body under the Vietnam National Academy of Music), where he holds the position of Vice President. In some of my articles on music research, he read and discussed very sincerely with me, then published them in the music research magazine.

He left behind many research works and contributed to completing the dossiers of world-recognized heritages such as: Southern amateur music, folk songs, ca tru, mother worship, hat van, then singing... In his research work, he was a serious and fastidious person. He made great contributions when submitting scientific dossiers on ca tru to UNESCO, and carried out many research projects on ethnic music.

Researcher Dang Hoanh Loan

Music researcher Dang Hoanh Loan was born in 1943 in Ha Dong town, now Hanoi. In 1963, he graduated from the Department of Traditional Musical Instruments of the Vietnam Music School (now the Vietnam National Academy of Music). From 1964 to 1975, he conducted the Inter-Zone 5 Opera Orchestra. From 1976, he was a researcher and collector at the Institute of Music. In 1996, he held the position of Deputy Director of the Institute of Music until his retirement.

He was the leader of the largest field trip in the country to study the art of Ca Tru, directly preparing a scientific dossier on the Vietnamese art of Ca Tru to submit to UNESCO. In 2009, UNESCO recognized Ca Tru as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of urgent protection.

His outstanding research works include: Studying the musical structure in the Tam Tu Tuong class, An outline of Quang Tri folk and traditional music, Development of traditional music - goals, results and shortcomings, Ca tru - things seen.

In addition to research and theory, Mr. Dang Hoanh Loan also participated in composing music with a number of works: Listening to H'Ri's story (dance music), Suoi dan T'rung hat (20 T'rung instrument ensemble), two albums Love story of mountains and rivers and Premonition (2007). He was in charge of the music for five plays: The Crow God and the Stone Statue, Betel and Areca, The Official's Place, A Thousand Years of Love and Hatred, Pham Cong - Cuc Hoa.

He was awarded a certificate of merit by the Government and a 25-year cultural medal. In July 2023, the researcher received the Tran Van Khe award.
