When Phung asked her husband where they were going on their honeymoon, Nam replied: "All over Vietnam" and Phung nodded.
Phi Phung and Trung Nam, a couple in their 30s living in Ho Chi Minh City, used their savings to fulfill their dream of traveling to the northern mountainous provinces. During their 29-day journey from North to South (from February 15 to March 15), Phung and Trung had memories that they will never forget because they were "like no other".
"We accidentally did good things twice, so every time we think about it, we feel very happy," Phung said.
Phung and her husband took photos near Ban Gioc waterfall, Cao Bang .
The first time was in Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai . Trung drove his wife from the bamboo forest to the homestay. The road down was narrow and steep, only one car could move. While going downhill, they accidentally blocked the escape route of a robber driving a motorbike in the opposite direction. Thanks to that, the police behind caught up and arrested the bad guy.
Continuing on, the couple saw a police car coming to help their teammates catch the robber. They were told to drive carefully because the road was steep and difficult to navigate. The police also explained that the robber had "snatch a phone" from someone. "We were happy because we accidentally helped someone else," Phung said.
The second time was when we went camping at Cau Vom, Hue . There was a beautiful stream in that area, Phung said. There was also a family with a small child camping there. While the couple was taking pictures, the child went to the stream alone, without an adult. Suddenly, the child slipped and fell. Phung instinctively ran after him but stopped when she got close to the stream because she didn't know how to swim.
Phung's husband, who was taking pictures nearby, shouted at his wife to stay still so he could run out to save her. Phung initially intended to wait, but the baby fell into a whirlpool. Seeing the child struggling and drowning, she jumped in regardless. Trung Nam arrived in time and pulled both his wife and the baby up. Phung was trembling with fear but still happy to have done a good deed. Only then did the baby's family find out what had happened and run over. They thanked the couple.
"Everyone should pay attention to children, because just a little carelessness can cause problems," said a female tourist from Ho Chi Minh City.
Explaining why they spent a month on their honeymoon instead of just 3-5 days like other couples, Phung said they both had free time. They had both just quit their jobs and planned to move to Da Lat to open a restaurant after the wedding. "If we don't go now, who knows when we'll be able to go," Trung said. Phung wanted to have memories to tell her children and grandchildren about "how crazy our parents were back then." In addition, both husband and wife have a passion for traveling.
Before the departure, they sent their motorbike to the capital for transportation. The couple rode motorbikes throughout the entire trip, except for the first leg of the flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi.
The couple focuses on experiences with nature. They bring tents, chairs, camping equipment, tables, bowls, and chopsticks. Phung also does not forget to bring the most beautiful clothes and dresses for taking photos. However, they always emphasize safety. "In Ha Giang, there are beautiful virtual rock cliffs. If you climb up there, you can have memorable photos. But my husband and I do not climb because it is not safe," Phung said. According to Trung, traveling is for fun, if you have an accident, "it is no longer fun".
The couple accidentally went the wrong way and blocked the robber's path.
There were no luxurious experiences during the trip, but Phung always felt satisfied because in return she had many unexpected but touching encounters with strangers. One of the most touching memories for her was the trip to Cao Bang.
It was late afternoon, and the couple stopped to rest at a terraced field. They met the landowner and asked to pitch a tent for the night, and he agreed. "I thought it would stop there. But it didn't," Phung said. That evening, the woman brought her child down to play with them. Then, her husband and father-in-law also came down to talk to the guests. Fearing that the two guests from the South would not be able to stand the cold of the North, the owner invited them into the house to sleep. Phung and Nam refused.
"Then they brought firewood down for us to burn to keep warm. I was very surprised and touched," Nam said. As for Phung, she was a bit worried because she saw that strangers could be so kind. "Everyone here is so kind. They are kind without any reason," said the female tourist from Ho Chi Minh City.
China's drone recorded the scene of a little girl slipping and falling into the water.
During their honeymoon across Vietnam, the couple traveled more than 4,300 km (by motorbike), passing through the following provinces and cities: Hanoi - Thai Nguyen - Bac Kan - Cao Bang - Ha Giang - Yen Bai - Lao Cai - Son La - Ninh Binh - Thanh Hoa - Vinh - Quang Binh - Quang Tri - Hue - Da Nang - Hoi An - Quy Nhon - Nha Trang - Ninh Thuan - Ho Chi Minh City. The couple did not "ride horses to see flowers", but visited famous destinations in each place such as Ho Lake, Lung Cu flagpole, Tau cave, Ta Xua, dinosaur spine, Ban Gioc waterfall, Hoi An ancient town... They also enjoyed many specialties such as bun thang, Hanoi bun cha, Cao Bang rice rolls, free-range chicken...
The total cost of the trip is about 35 million. With this amount of money, the couple can buy a tour to go abroad, even 2-3 countries. But Phung said she wants to go all over Vietnam first. "After going, I realized that Vietnam has many beautiful landscapes. Each region has its own beauty, not mixed together," Nam said. In addition, they also want to travel domestically as a move to partly support the local economy.
After the trip, Phung had significant changes in her outlook on life. Before traveling across Vietnam, Phung admitted that she was a "complainer" and often compared herself to people who were better than her. When interacting with the locals she met along the way, seeing many people "suffering so much" but still always happy, Phung thought differently.
Phung feels more mature. She stopped comparing herself because she sees herself as "happier than many people". Phung said she feels very grateful to her parents for raising her and giving her a full life. "I look at everything in life more lightly after this trip", the female tourist said.
