Summer-Autumn Crop 2025: Prioritize short-term varieties, limit risks due to natural disasters

(Baohatinh.vn) - Ha Tinh has started planting summer-autumn rice amid great seasonal pressure. Short-term varieties are the leading solution to help farmers feel secure in production and avoid natural disasters at the end of the season.

Due to the impact of the recent heavy rains, the spring rice harvest in many localities has been significantly delayed. Meanwhile, the summer-autumn crop planting schedule in the whole province needs to be completed before June 15 to avoid late-season natural disasters. This means that farmers only have about 10 days left to harvest spring rice, prepare the land and sow the summer-autumn crop.

In Cam Xuyen district - one of the localities heavily affected by floods, the interrupted harvest is putting great pressure on summer-autumn crop production. Mr. Nguyen Van Dung - Chairman of Cam Lac Commune People's Committee said: "The whole commune still has nearly 400 hectares of spring rice that have not been harvested. With a short time, we will have difficulty ensuring progress. The commune is balancing the plan to speed up the harvest in the coming days."

Localities in Ha Tinh are speeding up the spring rice harvest.

With nearly 2,000 hectares of unharvested rice, of which over 300 hectares are deeply flooded, Huong Khe district is facing many "obstacles" in completing the summer-autumn planting season. Ms. Le Thi Tham - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Huong Khe district said: "The summer-autumn crop is already difficult every year due to the uneven terrain of the fields, this year, the spring crop ended late, causing even greater time pressure. The locality is mobilizing maximum machinery to harvest spring rice, retain water in the fields for summer-autumn cultivation, and at the same time, converting crop structures in areas that often lack irrigation water."

Currently, to ensure the planting schedule, many localities are taking advantage of favorable conditions after the rain to start preparing the land. In Can Loc, with the motto "harvest to where, prepare the land there", the district has assigned specific production targets to the communes, at the same time organizing the dredging of canals, repairing dams, and pumping stations to ensure water sources.

Farmers take advantage of the available water in the fields and start tilling the land in areas where the harvest has been completed.

Ms. Tran Thi Hanh (Moi village, Xuan Loc commune, Can Loc) shared: "This season is a busy season, even though I haven't finished harvesting yet, I still take the opportunity to call the tiller in areas with proactive water. Only then will people be able to complete sowing and planting in accordance with local recommendations."

In the area outside the dike of Duc Tho district, summer-autumn production always follows the principle of "the sooner the better". These days, Tan Dan commune has started to prepare the land with an urgent spirit. Ms. Pham Thi Xuan (Tan My village, Tan Dan commune) said: "This crop, I planted nearly 1 acre, mainly short-term varieties. The water source is abundant, so my family prepared the land in time in the "flood-flooded" rice areas. With this progress, we can plant the seeds in the next few days".

According to information from the provincial Department of Crop Production and Livestock, to date, localities have prepared land on over 3,200 hectares. The entire province will focus on completing the summer-autumn crop before June 15. For some localities such as: the area outside the Duc Tho dike, the lower Huong Son area, Bac Hong Linh, Nghi Xuan, ... strive to finish before June 10.

Many areas of spring rice were flooded and fell over, so harvesters could not reach them and had to be harvested by hand.

Prioritize short-term varieties to limit risks

Faced with great pressure on the season and risks due to natural disasters, Ha Tinh advocates using rice varieties with a growing period of less than 110 days. The structure of the variety set is diverse in terms of types, adaptability, and resistance. Popular varieties include Nep 98, BQ, Khang Dan mut, Khang Dan 18, Xuan Mai, Bac Thinh, Ha Phat 3, Thien Uu 8, BT09, PC6, HN6... Hybrid rice varieties such as Nhi Uu 838, TH3-5, TH3-3, MHC2, Lai Thom 6, Thai Xuyen 111... are proactively arranged in areas with sufficient water and high intensive cultivation.

Mr. Le Ngoc Ha - Vice Chairman of Cam Xuyen District People's Committee said: "This summer-autumn crop, the district strives to produce over 9,000 hectares. Short-term, easy-to-sell, stable-quality varieties are often prioritized by farmers for use in large fields such as Nep 98, Nep 87, Khang Dan 18, Xuan Mai, etc. The concentration and accumulation of land has created favorable conditions for the locality in arranging the seed structure, speeding up the sowing and planting progress and proactively implementing pest control."

Mass varieties with short growing time are of interest to many farmers.

For special areas such as outside the dike, low-lying areas in Duc Tho, lower Huong Son, Bac Hong Linh, Nghi Xuan..., the province arranges varieties with a growing period of less than 95 days such as: PC6, BT09, Xuan Mai, Khang Dan 18, TH3-3, TBR97... Mr. Tran Xuan Vuong (Xuan Son village, Co Dam commune, Nghi Xuan) shared: "Due to the terrain that is prone to flooding at the end of the season, we only choose short-term varieties like BT09 to ensure early harvest".

In the 2025 summer-autumn crop, in addition to "veteran" varieties, promising varieties that have shown adaptability in the area will continue to have their suitable areas expanded for evaluation and selection to add to the mass variety set such as: HG12, TBR97, Huong Binh, Huong Thanh 8, TH3-7, TBR87, AYT77,...

TBR97 rice variety continues to be tested to select and add to the mass variety set.

Mr. Nguyen Tong Phong - Deputy Head of the Department of Crop Production and Livestock (Department of Agriculture and Environment) said: "Localities need to focus on mobilizing human and material resources to speed up the spring rice harvest when the weather turns good; proactively carry out land preparation and sowing in areas that have been harvested and have favorable irrigation water to strive to complete the area before June 15. For low-lying areas where summer-autumn rice is grown due to flooding, early sowing is needed; sow rice in the corners of the fields in areas using varieties with a growing period of over 100 days."

In the 2025 summer-autumn crop, Ha Tinh will plant more than 45,170 hectares of rice. The whole province will focus on land preparation and sowing for the summer-autumn crop, striving to finish before June 15 to harvest before September 10. The structure of using the main rice varieties with a growing period of less than 110 days is: Nep 98, Bac Thinh, Ha Phat 3, Khang Dan mut, Khang Dan 18, Xuan Mai, VNR20, Lai Thom 6, Thai Xuyen 111, Nhi Uu 838, ...
