Support the right subjects, suitable to local conditions

Breeding cows is an economically effective model, especially in mountainous districts. However, not all households have the conditions to invest. The models of supporting breeding cows from the National Target Program for Sustainable Poverty Reduction implemented in localities in recent years have created opportunities for households to develop their economies and escape poverty sustainably.

Replicating the model of breeding cows helps people in mountainous areas escape poverty sustainably.

From the model of supporting breeding cows in Phu Dinh commune, one of the areas with many difficulties in Thai Nguyen province, many households have had more opportunities to develop their livelihoods and escape poverty. The model is proving to be practically effective, aiming at the goal of sustainable poverty reduction in mountainous ethnic minority areas.

In 2023, Phu Dinh was selected to implement the project to replicate the model of breeding cows for poor and near-poor households in two hamlets Khuon Tat and Na Tam. These are two hamlets with many socio-economic difficulties, high rates of poor and near-poor households, mainly inhabited by Dao and Tay ethnic groups.

Accordingly, 10 poor and near-poor households were supported with a quality breeding cow each, with the State supporting 95% of the value of the breeding cow, and the people contributing the remaining 5%. The choice of breeding cow model is considered appropriate because it takes advantage of natural conditions, available food sources and is suitable for the farming practices of the people in the mountains.

Not only are breeding cows supported, households are also trained and instructed in breeding techniques and care for breeding cows. The commune government coordinates with specialized agencies to guide people in planting and caring for grass for cow feed; building hygienic barns; breeding techniques, and preventing and treating diseases for livestock.

Local agricultural extension officers and veterinarians regularly inspect, provide technical support and vaccination instructions, especially in winter to protect livestock. Thanks to this, people's awareness and livestock farming practices have changed significantly. Previously, livestock farming was mainly small-scale, free-range, and lacked techniques, but now people know how to proactively plant grass, store food and prevent diseases for cows.

Creating a foundation to escape poverty

Through actual monitoring, many households that have benefited from the model have made significant progress. The family of Mr. Tran Dinh Tuy (Tay ethnic group, Khuon Tat hamlet) is a typical example. After receiving breeding cows and fully participating in training sessions, after only a short time, his family's cow gave birth to its first calf. Mr. Tuy shared: "Previously, my family did not have capital to raise cattle, but now with support for breeding cows and technical guidance, we are confident in developing the economy. From one cow, I now have two, hoping to escape poverty soon."

In Phu Dinh commune, breeding cows have helped poor households improve their lives.

Households like Mr. Hoang Van Dang and Ms. Trieu Thi Noi in Phu Dinh commune have also recorded positive results. While in the past people raised cows in a free-range manner, paying little attention to care and vaccination, now they are more aware of building barns, planting grass, storing food, and taking better care of their livestock. Thanks to that, the cows grow healthily, minimizing risks due to disease and weather.

According to the Phu Dinh commune government, the model of supporting breeding cows has initially brought about clear results, helping poor households have more sources of livelihood, increase income, and gradually stabilize their lives. More importantly, the model has contributed to changing awareness and production habits, encouraging people to develop livestock farming in a sustainable direction, with links and application of technical advances.

The local government is also actively mobilizing and supporting people to replicate the model, converting from spontaneous farming to oriented farming, with good techniques and disease management. With the close support of the government, professional agencies and the positive response of the people, the model has created trust and spread widely.

The project of breeding cows is not only to support breeding animals but also an important first step to help poor people have the motivation and conditions to develop their economy. From single poor households, many local households have now begun to rise up to escape poverty and stabilize their lives.
