(QBĐT) - Military leader Mai Luong, also known as Lanh Mai, was an outstanding leader who made many great contributions to the Can Vuong patriotic movement in Quang Binh in the late 19th century. He was born in the year of Mau Tuat (1838) in Tho Linh village, Thuan Thi commune, Quang Trach district, Quang Binh province (now Tho Linh village, Quang Son commune, Ba Don town). Born into a poor family with a tradition of studiousness, from a young age he was famous for his intelligence, determination and willpower.

In the martial arts examination under King Tu Duc on May 2, At Suu year (May 26, 1865), he passed the martial arts exam and was appointed by the court to the army, holding the position of Hiep Quan. Right from his official position, Hiep Quan Mai Luong demonstrated his sense of national independence and determination to fight against foreign invaders. In 1885, when King Ham Nghi issued the Can Vuong Edict, he was one of the first patriotic scholars and scholars in Quang Binh to respond to the call. He was appointed by King Ham Nghi to the position of Lanh Binh and returned to his hometown to recruit militiamen and gather resistance forces.

After King Ham Nghi was captured, despite the difficulties of the movement, Mai Luong's army remained loyal to the resistance cause. On May 12, 1890, he passed away at Cao Mai base due to severe malaria. His grave, initially hidden in Cao Mai forest, was later brought back to his hometown by his family and relatives for burial.
On January 24, 1998, his tomb was recognized as a Historical-Cultural Relic by the Ministry of Culture and Information (now the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism). In 2003, the State built the tomb of Commander Mai Luong in Sum Mac area, Dai Son mountain area, Quang Son commune. By 2014, the tomb was repaired and restored. However, due to harsh weather and time, the project has seriously degraded.
In 2025, the Provincial People's Committee and the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Quang Binh decided to rebuild and restore the mausoleum on the old foundation, with the goal of building a sustainable and solemn project, meeting the expectations of the government, people and descendants for the leader in the Can Vuong movement.

The Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism has assigned the People's Committee of Quang Son Commune and the descendants of Commander Mai Luong to be responsible for rebuilding and renovating the mausoleum according to the approved design. Lieutenant General Mai Xuan Vinh, Hero of the People's Armed Forces, former Vice Admiral, Commander of the Vietnam People's Navy, and great-grandson of Commander Mai Luong, was assigned to preside over this work. The project was designed based on traditional factors, terrain, feng shui, climate, local customs and experience from previous constructions.
On March 16, 2025, the groundbreaking ceremony for the mausoleum was held. The mausoleum was built on an area of ​​106 square meters , the entire temple, tombstone, gate, and railing were all made of monolithic Ha Trung Thanh Hoa green stone. The stele house has a facade of more than 8 meters wide, including a shrine and two incense sticks. The shrine is 2 meters wide, more than 4 meters high, on top is a stone block carved with crane wings, two dragons, the sun and the moon. In the shrine, there is a portrait of Commander Mai Luong, the altar, incense bowl, and flower vase are all made of stone. In front of the shrine, there are two parallel sentences praising his career and reputation.

The octagonal tomb, with a diameter of more than 3m, is installed with 3-level stone blocks. The tomb gate is designed in a three-door style, with gate pillars decorated with lotus buds. The gate and railing are carved with lotus patterns. The scroll has the words "Mo Lanh Binh Mai Luong" and the word "Phuc". The foundation of the project is designed to be nearly 2m deep with a layer of rubble stone and reinforced concrete beams to ensure stability.
The tomb is located in the Sum Mac pine forest of Dai Son mountain facing Rao Nan river, with its back against Dai Son mountain, creating a quiet, sacred and majestic landscape. This was also one of the areas of activity of Mai Luong's army during the Can Vuong period.

The reconstruction of the tomb of Commander Mai Luong was carried out thanks to the attention and direction of Quang Binh province, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the contributions of descendants. The project was built with new materials, new and aesthetic landscapes, and was inaugurated by the family on April 22, 2025, witnessed by the leaders of the province, Quang Son commune and many descendants of the Mai family on the occasion of the 135th anniversary of Commander Mai Luong's death.

Previously, on April 20, at the tomb of Commander Mai Luong in Cao Quang commune, Lieutenant General Mai Xuan Vinh presented 20 gifts to people in difficult circumstances in Cao Quang commune and together with Mai Luong's descendants supported the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the commune to build Khe Chuoi clean water project to serve households in Tan Tien village, with a total cost of nearly 60 million VND. On April 21, Lieutenant General Mai Xuan Vinh also presented playground equipment for preschool children in Quang Son commune with a cost of over 150 million VND.
