Consider adjusting forest boundaries and bringing clean water to Thanh An island commune.

Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Minh Thanh requested to thoroughly handle two urgent issues of Thanh An: protective forest boundaries and clean water sources for island commune residents.

On the morning of November 5, during a working trip to Thanh An island commune, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Minh Thanh spent a lot of time listening to and resolving major problems of the locality. Two issues that Mr. Thanh was particularly interested in were the proposal to move Cu Lao Phu Loi out of the protective forest boundary and ensuring clean water sources for the islanders.

Phu Loi Islet is 48.56 hectares wide and has been home to a community formed before 1975 for decades. Although 15.23 hectares of the residential area have been granted land use rights certificates, the entire area is still within the protective forest boundary, causing difficulties in management and planning. The leader of Thanh An Commune People's Committee said that the locality has made many requests and the city has also assigned a review, but so far there has been no official information about the boundary adjustment.

“We hope the city will soon announce the scope and location of Phu Loi Islet, which will be removed from the protective forest boundary according to Decision 1125, and at the same time guide the commune to implement the general planning of the island commune,” Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Huynh Thanh Nghi commune suggested.

The issue of clean water has been a concern for Thanh An residents for many years. Up to now, the commune has needed about 28,000m³ of water per month but has been completely dependent on barges transporting water from the mainland to supply two satellite stations. Recently, SAWACO has implemented a project to expand the water supply network and completed a pipeline on the main road of Cu Lao Phu Loi, but this system has not yet been put into operation.

The commune leaders proposed that the city direct SAWACO to soon take over two satellite water supply stations, and at the same time study and invest in a water pipeline from the mainland to the island to ensure a stable, long-term water source for the people.

Regarding the recommendations on the boundary of protective forests and clean water, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Minh Thanh said that the local proposals were reasonable. He emphasized that people in Cu Lao Phu Loi have lived stably for many decades, this area is actually no longer a forest. Therefore, the city agreed on the direction of adjustment, assigned relevant units to survey, report to the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee and submit to the City People's Council for consideration.

Regarding the issue of clean water, Mr. Thanh emphasized the need for a fundamental solution to replace the practice of transporting water by barge to Thanh An island commune: "This is only a temporary measure, both costly and difficult to ensure long-term hygiene. The city must soon study a plan to draw clean water from the mainland to serve 100% of the people on the island commune."
