On the afternoon of October 23, at a regular press conference providing information on the socio -economic situation of Ho Chi Minh City, the Department of Tourism said that from now until June 2026, it will continue to coordinate with the Port Management Board in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area to complete documents and develop a pilot plan to welcome international passenger ships.
Specifically, according to Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thao - Head of the Department of Tourism Resource Development Planning (Department of Tourism), the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area is currently a cargo port, not specifically planned for passengers. Therefore, to serve cruise tourism, more time is needed to prepare infrastructure, human resources and procedures for receiving and returning international passengers.
"We will coordinate with travel businesses, port operators and relevant localities to ensure better conditions for receiving international passenger ships, and at the same time consider the possibility of adding passenger service functions, instead of just stopping at the pilot level," Ms. Thao said.
A representative of the Department of Tourism added that, implementing the direction of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, the Department of Construction has coordinated with departments and branches to advise on a list of priority investment projects for waterway transport, including international passenger ports.
It is expected that in the period of 2026 - 2030, Ho Chi Minh City will invest in 3 international passenger ports in the old Vung Tau area and Khanh Hoi (old Ho Chi Minh City).
The representative of the Department of Construction informed that the unit has completed the pre-feasibility study report and submitted to the City People's Committee a proposal for investment in the Vung Tau international passenger port project, in order to meet the increasing demand for sea transport and tourism and contribute to the socio-economic development of the City.
According to the planning approved by the Prime Minister , Cai Mep port area is oriented to be an international gateway and transit port; Thi Vai port area serves inter-regional socio-economic development.
The Ministry of Construction has allowed international passenger ships to continue to be received at some ports in the Cai Mep - Thi Vai area until June 30, 2026.
