In January, Vietnam exported 459 million USD worth of fruits and vegetables, up 89.2% over the same period in 2023.
Preliminary figures from the Fruit and Vegetable Association were released based on customs calculations. Accordingly, this is also the first month of the year with the highest growth compared to previous years.
Fruit and vegetable exports increased sharply in the first month of the year due to the large purchases of durian, banana, and dragon fruit by China. Currently, continuous cold spells have limited China's domestic banana supply. The temperature drops, causing the bananas on the tree to turn black and become unsalable. The shortage of goods in the Chinese market has helped facilitate the export of Vietnamese bananas.
In addition, mid-year, Chinese dragon fruit is abundant and is now out of season. Traditionally, Chinese people love to use dragon fruit as an offering during Tet, so demand is high. The consumption season of Vietnamese dragon fruit in the Chinese market usually lasts from the beginning of the year to the end of May every year.

Mr. Nguyen expects that this year, in addition to the favorable durian export activities, China's opening of the door to watermelons and other frozen and processed fruits from Vietnam will help the turnover reach 6.5 billion USD. Currently, the quality of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables is increasingly improved and ensures the criteria to enter many markets.
During President Xi Jinping’s recent visit, China announced that it would open its market for many potential agricultural products from Vietnam, including fresh coconuts, frozen fruit products, citrus fruits, avocados, custard apples, and rose apples. During the visit, the two sides also signed a protocol on watermelon exports.
In addition to China and the US, the EU is also about to open its doors to many more types of Vietnamese fruit. Authorities are negotiating to open the market for passion fruit to the US and Australia; grapefruit to Japan, South Korea, Australia and India; and durian to India.
