Request to review drug prescription and milk use in hospitals

On April 20, the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management ( Ministry of Health ) issued a document on strengthening inspection and supervision of the implementation of legal regulations in medical examination and treatment.

According to the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment, recently, there has been information reflecting the situation of medical staff advising and instructing patients and their families to use milk products produced and distributed by some enterprises and discovered to be fake milk.

To ensure that medical examination and treatment strictly comply with legal regulations, medical expertise and ensure the rights and safety of patients, the Ministry of Health requests that the Directors of hospitals under the Ministry and the Directors of health departments review, check, and compare the list of drugs and drugs used in hospitals with counterfeit drugs that have been investigated and detected, and take measures to handle them according to regulations.

Hospital directors and health department directors should review and check the prescription of non-medicinal products such as milk, functional foods, etc. to promptly correct and take measures to handle them.

Functional units need to strengthen inspection, supervision and rectification if they detect acts such as prescribing and indicating drugs that have not been licensed for circulation; prescribing drugs, indicating the implementation of technical services, medical equipment, suggesting patients to be transferred to hospitals or other acts for profit; practitioners taking advantage of prescribing drugs for profit; advertising drugs that do not match the confirmed content.

It is necessary to urgently deploy solutions to ensure prescription and rational and safe use of drugs; and to strengthen clinical pharmacy activities in prescription consultation and supervision.

The Director of the Department of Health needs to check and review the medical staff's consultation, introduction and sale of dairy products (especially the detected fake dairy products), functional foods... to patients and their families. At the same time, review and ensure that nutritional activities in hospitals are carried out in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Medical Examination and Treatment 2023 and Circular 18/2020 of the Ministry of Health regulating nutritional activities in hospitals.

The Ministry of Health requires strict handling, absolutely no cover-up or tolerance of violations; Strengthening the dissemination of legal regulations, timely information to raise awareness and sense of responsibility of medical staff, patients, relatives and people in participating in detecting and fighting violations.

The Ministry of Health requests that Directors of hospitals under the Ministry and Directors of health departments report on the implementation status and results of handling violations (if any) to the Ministry before April 24.
