The purpose of ALoP technology on Galaxy S25 Slim

Short for “all lenses on prism,” ALoP is a new telephoto camera technology that rearranges the structure of the lenses and prisms in periscope zoom cameras to make them more compact. Until now, periscope cameras have used a folded camera structure, placing the lens assembly between the prism and the image sensor. The lenses stand vertically relative to the plane of the smartphone body, with their diameters determining the height of the camera bump.

This arrangement limits the possible telephoto improvements in image brightness. A wider lens diameter is necessary for brighter images. Moving to a larger telephoto lens and brighter telephoto camera using a larger image sensor would increase both the height and length of the module, directly increasing the size and thickness of the camera bump on the back of the smartphone.

ALoP solves this problem by placing the lenses horizontally on the prism, allowing the lens diameter to be increased for brighter images without affecting the height of the camera module. It also reduces the space required for the lenses, allowing for a shorter module length.

Recent leaks suggest that the Galaxy S25 Slim will be under 7mm thick, which is thinner than the thinnest Galaxy S24 model, the standard version, which is 7.6mm thick. So even a 6.9mm Galaxy S25 Slim would be significantly thinner than the Galaxy S24 series. It remains to be seen whether ALoP technology will bring any camera improvements to the Galaxy S25 Slim.
