YouTube still has 'dark corners' that no one knows about
YouTube has always been a 'black box' to the outside world , causing experts to worry about the lack of transparency of the world's largest video platform. However, a recent study has revealed surprising numbers about a 'ghost city' of content hidden inside YouTube.
Using a program that automatically 'guesses' video URLs, researchers found that YouTube has 14.8 billion videos by mid-2024. However, the majority of these have no interaction with any viewers despite existing in a huge content repository.
Additionally, the statistics show that the average 'ghost' YouTube video has just 41 views, with 4% having no views at all. Over 74% of videos have no comments and 89% have no likes.

The study also found that most YouTube videos are of low production quality, short in length, and have little commercial value. Only 14% of videos are produced using professional equipment, and only 38% have undergone any editing. More than half of videos have shaky images, and 85% have poor audio. Furthermore, the typical YouTube video is only 64 seconds long, and more than 30% are less than 33 seconds long.
This is contrary to the image that YouTube is trying to build, which is a platform that allows content creators to build careers and become 'stars' online.
However, researchers say YouTube is more than just an entertainment platform. It has become part of the digital infrastructure where people can freely express themselves and share everyday moments.
This discovery raises many questions about YouTube's role and responsibility in curating content and supporting creators. Is YouTube doing enough to help videos reach the right audiences? Or is the platform inadvertently creating a giant content 'graveyard' where billions of videos are forgotten?
