Zalo is the most popular messaging platform in Vietnam in 2024

According to the report “The Connected Consumer Q4 2024” published by Decision Lab, Zalo continues to lead messaging platforms in Vietnam in terms of usage rate and preference rate.

Results from the fourth quarter show that throughout 2024, Zalo maintained its position as the top messaging platform with the highest usage rate and popularity.

In the category of “Messaging platforms”, in the fourth quarter, Zalo led with a penetration rate of 80%, followed by Facebook with 64% and Messenger with 51%. In addition, the ranking also includes other platforms such as TikTok (18%), Viber (7%), WhatsApp (4%). The large difference in usage rates between Zalo and the above famous international messaging platforms reflects the increasing preference of domestic users for “Made in Vietnam” messaging platforms.

In terms of preference rate, Zalo is also leading the platforms with a preference rate of 54% in the fourth quarter of 2024, far surpassing Messenger and Facebook with a preference rate of 17% in the fourth quarter of 2024 on both platforms.

Zalo continues to consolidate its position as the most favorite platform among all three user generation groups: Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z. In the Gen X group (those born between 1965 and 1980), 68% of those surveyed prefer to use Zalo for casual messaging, while the rate of Facebook and Messenger usage for messaging in the Gen X group is only 14% and 12%, respectively.

Similar to Gen X, the gap in the rate of liking Zalo (55%) among Gen Y (those born between 1980 and 1995) compared to other messaging platforms is also large - double the rate of liking Facebook (22%) and nearly 4 times the rate of liking Messenger (12%).

Zalo continues to consolidate its position as the most favorite platform among all three user generation groups: Gen X, Gen Y and Gen Z.

For the young Gen Z group, although the gap has narrowed, the percentage of people who like to use Zalo is still high (37%) compared to the percentage of people who like to use Messenger (29%) and Facebook (24%).

This is the 17th consecutive quarter that Zalo has achieved the favorite platform ranking in all 3 user generation groups since 2020 - a milestone marking Zalo's transformation when it surpassed Facebook Messenger to become the number one messaging app in Vietnam.

According to the newly announced 2024 Consolidated Financial Report of VNG , the Zalo messaging platform has 77.7 million monthly active users (MAU) and nearly 2 billion messages sent every day.

Zalo's continuous holding of the top 1 messaging application position also shows its ability to master technology and vision for sustainable development. As the leading messaging platform for many years, Zalo has continuously researched and launched new features to serve diverse needs.
