Coach Mourinho's unexpected departure could lead to his return to Old Trafford as Amorim's replacement.
The sacking of coach Mourinho by Fenerbahce was announced at noon on August 29th (Vietnam time). In the announcement, the Turkish club stated that the Portuguese coach had voluntarily left the team. The main reason given was his failure to help Fenerbahce qualify for the Champions League group stage (they failed in the play-off round).

The 2025-2026 season will be Mourinho's second season managing Fenerbahce, and the club has made a significant number of signings in the current transfer window, with a host of top stars joining, including Jhon Duran, Nelson Semedo, Milan Skriniar, and most recently, Edson Alvarez.
However, Fenerbahce suffered a stunning early setback in their most important objective, losing to Benfica in the two-legged play-off (0-1 on aggregate) at the start of the season. This meant they failed to qualify for the Champions League group stage, a prestigious competition that would have provided the Turkish club with revenue to offset player acquisition costs.

The crisis at Manchester United - Is manager Amorim the problem?
Following his departure from Fenerbahce, the 11th club in Mourinho's career, rumors suggest that the 62-year-old is being courted by several Premier League clubs. These include his former club, Manchester United, which is currently in crisis and considering parting ways with manager Amorim.
Besides Mourinho, Solskjaer, another former Manchester United manager, is considered a strong candidate to replace Amorim once he is officially sacked, if he fails to revive the Red Devils in the near future.
Both Mourinho and Solskjaer are the most recent managers to have led Manchester United to a second-place finish in the Premier League, their best achievement since the glorious era of former manager Alex Ferguson (with 13 league titles).
