According to the Navy ( Ministry of National Defense ), participating in the 39th joint patrol in the Gulf of Tonkin, the Vietnam Navy sent a squadron of two anti-submarine frigates numbered 09 and 17 belonging to Brigade 171, Naval Region 2, led by Colonel Le Dinh Nghi, Deputy Chief of Staff of Region 2, and Colonel Vu Hong Son, Deputy Brigade Commander of Brigade 171, as Squadron Leader.

The Chinese Navy participating in the joint patrol included two missile frigates numbered 630 and 649 belonging to the 18th Missile Frigate Squadron, North Sea Naval Base, led by Senior Lieutenant Colonel Truong Minh, Deputy Squadron Commander, 18th Missile Frigate Squadron, as Squadron Commander.

Implementing the agreed plan, this joint patrol, the naval fleets of the two countries conducted the following activities: patrolling along the demarcation line of the Gulf of Tonkin; search and rescue training, setting up and mobilizing the fleet formation; simple information training; fighting to protect the life of the ships and performing the salute ceremony at sea.

The 39th joint patrol took place in unfavorable weather conditions, with waves of level 6 - level 7. However, officers and sailors of the two countries' navies overcame difficulties, coordinated smoothly, completed the plan on schedule, achieved the required goals, and ensured absolute safety for the forces and vehicles of both sides.
Joint patrols between the Vietnam People's Navy and the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy in the Gulf of Tonkin have been an annual joint activity between the two sides since 2006.
