4 seemingly harmless living habits that are leading to cancer

Medical research has found that cancer is not only caused by genetic factors and pollution, but also by long-term harmful behaviors. These behaviors damage DNA, thereby increasing the risk of many types of cancer.

The following lifestyles seem harmless, but if prolonged, they will increase the risk of cancer.

Habits that increase stress

Sleeping in, checking your phone as soon as you wake up, and doing many things at once will increase stress. Prolonged stress not only affects mental health but also negatively impacts the immune system, increases inflammation and changes hormones. All of these factors contribute to the risk of developing cancer, according to the health website Medical News Today (UK).

An analysis in the journal BMJ found a significant link between high levels of psychological stress and an increased risk of dying from cancer. Although stress does not directly cause cancer, it indirectly influences health behaviors, such as smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity. These in turn contribute to an increased risk of the disease.

Not protecting skin from the sun

Direct exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays without protection such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses can damage the DNA in skin cells. This is the leading cause of skin cancer, especially melanoma. In fact, just one severe sunburn doubles the risk of developing melanoma later in life.

Sitting too long increases the risk of cancer

Sitting for long periods of time, whether while working, playing video games, watching TV, or driving, increases the risk of many types of cancer, including colon, endometrial, and lung cancer. This is because sitting for long periods of time reduces metabolic activity, leading to chronic inflammation, insulin resistance, and hormonal imbalances. These are factors that promote the formation and growth of cancer cells.

Poor sleep

Sleep not only helps the body rest, but also supports the immune system, regenerates cells, and regulates hormones. Lack of sleep, poor sleep, or disrupted circadian rhythms increase the stress hormone cortisol, weaken the immune system, and increase chronic inflammation. These factors all contribute to cancer development, according to Medical News Today .
