On December 5, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) launched an appeal to raise 1.2 billion USD by 2025 to support 51 million children facing multiple crises in Eastern and Southern Africa.

According to UNICEF, 6 million more children are in need of assistance compared to last year, signaling a continued deterioration of the humanitarian situation in these areas. The donations will help UNICEF prioritize the needs and ensure the rights of children in disadvantaged communities in the region.
Some parts of Africa are more vulnerable to diseases such as monkeypox, Marburg fever, cholera and malaria, but others such as measles and polio are vaccine-preventable. About a third of children in the region face hunger and 28 million are at risk of malnutrition amid declining food production.
Despite improving school enrollment rates across the region, children’s access to education remains poor, with nearly 47 million children out of school and nine in 10 unable to read simple text by age 10. In addition, displacement in the region has increased by nearly 15% due to the impact of natural disasters and conflicts.
To protect children and build resilience to crises, UNICEF will continue to prioritize relief efforts for the most vulnerable, while strengthening countries' capacity to respond promptly and effectively to protect children's rights.
