(Dan Tri) - Aston Villa is very close to a ticket to the Champions League quarter-finals after easily defeating Club Brugge 3-1 away in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16.
Aston Villa have been a revelation in this season's Champions League. The Birmingham club are back in Europe's top flight for the first time since 1982/83, but have done something extraordinary.

In the qualifying stage, Aston Villa finished 8th (won 5, drew 1, lost 2). Thanks to that, they were given a special place in the round of 16. In this round, the English team was lucky to only meet a not-so-strong opponent, Club Brugge.
Aston Villa continued to prove their mettle. Despite playing away in Belgium, Unai Emery's team played with confidence. They opened the scoring in the 3rd minute thanks to Bailey's finishing shot in the penalty area.
Club Brugge showed that they are not to be trifled with when they equalized in the 11th minute through De Cuyper. This match was a tight affair. In fact, at many points in the second half, Club Brugge even put pressure on Aston Villa.
However, Emery's team still stood firm, before launching quality punches at the end of the match. In the 82nd minute, from Morgan Rogers' cross on the right wing, Brandon Mechele clumsily put the ball into his own net to help Aston Villa score a goal to increase the score to 2-1.

In the 88th minute, Aston Villa was awarded a penalty. Marco Asensio made it 3-1 from the spot. With this result, the English team almost had one foot in the quarter-finals. The rematch between the two teams will take place next week.
Marcus Rashford was placed on the field from the start in the match against Club Brugge. However, the English striker had an unsuccessful performance. He only had 1 shot and did not have any assists. Then, in the 63rd minute, Rashford had to leave the field to make way for Marco Asensio.
