Alaba does not want to leave Real. |
In the early morning of November 2, Real Madrid defeated Valencia 4-0 in round 11 of La Liga at Bernabeu. Alaba did not play in this match, he was even removed from the match registration list by coach Xabi Alonso.
The Austrian defender is giving Real Madrid a headache. According to AS, Alaba receives a salary of 22.5 million euros/year for the 2025/26 season at Real Madrid, equivalent to about 432,692 euros/week. This figure puts him in third place in the list of highest-paid players in La Liga, just behind Kylian Mbappe (31.25 million euros) and some other stars such as Robert Lewandowski or Frenkie de Jong.
Compare that to Valencia, a club struggling financially, whose total squad wage bill for the 2025/26 season is just €45.34 million. That means Alaba's salary alone accounts for nearly 50% of Los Che's wage budget, a shocking figure.
However, what Alaba brings to Real Madrid is not commensurate. In the last two seasons (2023/24 and 2024/25), this 33-year-old defender only played 24 matches in La Liga.

Alaba is no longer himself. |
A serious ligament injury to his left knee in December 2023 kept him out for more than 399 days, requiring two surgeries and only recently returning.
Previously, Real Madrid's board of directors proposed a deal to terminate Alaba's contract, which was to pay him half of his salary and let the player freely find a new destination. However, the 33-year-old player flatly refused. He is determined to stick with Real Madrid until the contract ends next summer, while enjoying the full benefits of his current salary.
After serious injuries, especially to his knee, Alaba knows that his chances of continuing to play for a top European club are almost gone. His market value, currently at around 6 million euros according to Transfermarkt, is probably the most viable option for the Austrian star's future, a move to Saudi Arabia or Türkiye.
From Real Madrid's perspective, Alaba's refusal to leave has caused the club to miss out on one of its biggest salaries, while also delaying plans to sign a new centre-back.
