Safety of reservoirs to respond to storm No. 13

After the online meeting with the Government, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep and Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Do Tam Hien chaired a meeting with relevant departments and branches to direct the response to storm No. 13 and post-storm circulation. In particular, special attention was paid to ensuring the safety of reservoirs.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep emphasized that, in addition to proactively responding to storm No. 13, the province needs to pay attention to the storm's circulation and the possibility of widespread heavy rain. After the last two heavy rains, the soil has become soft, low-lying areas have become saturated with water, and there is a possibility of widespread landslides and flooding. Forces are required to stay close to key areas and be ready to respond when needed.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep noted the reservoir operation plan, reducing the reservoir capacity to increase the ability to respond to heavy rains. In the eastern communes of Quang Ngai province, the total number of irrigation reservoirs is 127. Currently, the average capacity of irrigation reservoirs is about 69%, of which 114 reservoirs with free overflow are full. Particularly for Nuoc Trong reservoir, the reservoir water level is at 119.24m. In the western communes of Quang Ngai, the total number of irrigation reservoirs is 84. The average capacity of irrigation reservoirs is about 88%, of which 60 reservoirs are at 100% capacity. Dak Drinh Hydropower Reservoir, the reservoir water level is at 402.63m.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Hoang Hiep requested Quang Ngai province to pay attention to reservoir safety. All irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs need to carefully inspect their works, proactively operate and regulate, reserve capacity to receive floods, and ensure safety for downstream areas. When water needs to be released, timely notification must be given so that people in downstream areas know and proactively take precautions. The Deputy Minister emphasized that it is absolutely necessary to not allow sudden flood releases or floods to occur. Increase the number of on-duty forces and closely monitor the water level in the reservoir. Being proactive and prepared early is the decisive factor in minimizing damage and ensuring the safety of people's lives and property./.
