England defeated Italy 2-1 despite having to play with one less player in the first match of Group C of the Euro 2024 qualifiers which took place in the early morning of March 24.
The first round of Euro 2024 qualifiers took place across Europe on the night of March 23 and early morning of March 24.
* In Group C, the most notable match between Italy and England was extremely dramatic and ended with a 2-1 victory for the away team. The English team led the home team Italy 2-0 in the first half thanks to goals from Declan Rice (13') and Harry Kane (44'-penalty). The Italian team only managed to score 1 goal in the second half thanks to Mateo Retegui.
This was also England's first victory in Italy since 1961, and was truly a dream start for coach Gareth Southgate and his team on their journey to the Euro 2024 finals. However, this was not a "perfect performance" for the "Three Lions" as they had to play with one less man after Luke Shaw received a second yellow card and left the field in the 80th minute of the match.
With 1 goal, captain Harry Kane made history as the player who scored the most goals for the England team (54 goals), 1 goal more than the previous record holder Wayne Rooney.
* In Group J, Portugal beat Liechtenstein 4-0, with superstar Cristiano Ronaldo contributing two goals (51'-penalty; 63'). The remaining two goals were scored by Cancelo (8') and Silva (47').
This match also helped Ronaldo enter world football history as the player with the most international matches for a national team (197 matches).
