Green shift for a clean earth
Con Dao district is a typical case of green transition. Over the years, the locality has pursued sustainable development goals starting with plastic reduction. The message “Come without plastic, leave with love” has been widely spread at airports, wharves, destinations (such as Hang Duong Cemetery, Con Dao National Park, beaches, etc.), accommodation facilities, travel agencies, restaurants, eateries, etc.
The above activities received positive responses from many accommodation establishments and tourists. At the workshop on reducing plastic in the tourism industry held in March 2025, a representative of Six Senses Con Dao Resort shared that nearly 100% of items at Six Senses Con Dao Resort have been replaced with recycled or easily destroyed materials. Tourists to the resort are also gradually getting used to not bringing plastic bags or nylon.
From July 1, 2024, the People's Committee of Con Dao district calls on visitors to the locality to practice "5 no's": no votive paper; no disposable plastic cups and bottles; no disposable plastic trays; no foam for flower arrangements; no plastic bags to aim for a "green Con Dao".
Meanwhile, the recycling industry is also increasingly being prioritized for development locally to save energy, natural resources, protect the environment and open up prospects for clean industry in the future. Statistics from the Department of Agriculture and Environment show that in the province, there are currently more than 10 enterprises applying and effectively operating the regeneration of energy from waste. These factories all have the same goal of recycling waste into energy to supply industrial furnaces, power plants, steel, cement, etc. In addition, waste after recycling also becomes useful products such as industrial paper and organic fertilizers.
Green transformation for sustainable development, efficient use of energy and resources is also an urgent and necessary choice for the province's construction industry. Mr. Mai Trung Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Construction, said that in the past 10 years, Ba Ria - Vung Tau has chosen to develop the economy in conjunction with protecting natural resources through policies such as selecting contractors with high technology, creating high added value, being environmentally friendly, and using less energy. In addition, the province also has regulations on the use of environmentally friendly materials such as unburnt bricks, actively investing in urban green park systems, etc.
Towards net zero emissions
Looking back at the Provincial Green Index (PGI) journey, in 2022, the provincial PGI had a score of 15.42; ranked 19th nationwide. In 2023, Ba Ria-Vung Tau's PGI increased by 11 places, from 19th to 8th on the rankings.
Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 every year, aiming to raise awareness and action in environmental protection movements around the world, launched by the United Nations. Earth Day 2025 has the theme "Our Power, Our Planet", calling on organizations and individuals to take action to prevent disasters caused by climate change and environmental destruction. |
These figures demonstrate the efforts to protect the environment over many years and clearly affirm the province's viewpoint: "Do not trade off the environment for economic development, selectively attract investment, and focus on solutions to minimize environmental pollution". Mr. Pham Quoc Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said that maintaining and improving the PGI index not only affirms the commitment to protect the environment and improve the provincial PGI index, but also implements the direction of the Government and the Prime Minister according to the roadmap for greening economic sectors, contributing to the completion of the goal of net zero emissions by 2050. This is also the goal identified in the Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050.
Ba Ria - Vung Tau has been building a roadmap to green economic sectors; developing a circular economic model based on science-technology and digital transformation; building a green lifestyle; building and developing a system of green, smart, and modern ports, contributing to the country's efforts to reduce emissions, towards net emissions of "0" by 2050.
