Lessons from billionaire Todd Boehly

Billionaire Todd Boehly has just appointed coach Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea's head coach from July 1. Among the American owners in the Premier League such as Manchester United's Glazer, Arsenal's Stan Kroenke... Todd Boehly is very willing to spend in the transfer market. After only one year of taking over "The Blues" from Roman Abramovich, the 49-year-old boss spent 600 million pounds on players. Yet Chelsea finished the season in 12th place. Mr. Boehly did not attend Chelsea's final match last season, which partly shows that he was really disappointed. His mistake was in choosing the head coach. Thomas Tuchel, with a long history of helping Chelsea win the Champions League, once brought PSG to the final of this most prestigious tournament in Europe, was fired to make way for the less-known coach Graham Potter and Frank Lampard.

The decision to choose Pochettino instead of Julian Nagelsmann shows that Mr. Boehly more or less understands the harshness of the Premier League. Mr. Pochettino spent 5 years leading Tottenham, in which he reached the Champions League final once and helped PSG win Ligue 1 (France). Meanwhile, young coach Nagelsmann has only won the Bundesliga (Germany) once with Bayern Munich. The remaining problem is that this 49-year-old boss needs to be patient with coach Pochettino because Chelsea needs to recover after a bad season.

Pochettino has a lot of work to do at Chelsea in the coming time. The 51-year-old coach's favorite formation is 4-2-3-1, while Chelsea played 3-4-2-1 under interim coach Lampard last season. Chelsea's biggest weakness at the moment is their attacking strength. "The Blues" have only scored 38 goals after 38 rounds, even losing to the two relegated teams Leicester City and Leeds United. The Argentine coach plans to have a clear conversation about the future with two attacking players, Mason Mount and Romelu Lukaku. Mount is so bored with being pushed into the role of playmaker that he has only scored 3 goals compared to 11 goals in the previous season. The German player wants to leave Stamford Bridge in the summer transfer window. Meanwhile, striker Lukaku does not want to return to Chelsea after a year playing at Inter Milan on loan.

Pochettino's transfer plan has given billionaire Boehly at least three stars in attack, goalkeeper and defensive midfielder; priority is given to players with experience playing in the Premier League. Even if Mount and Lukaku are convinced by Pochettino to stay, Chelsea still need another striker. That is the consideration between former student Harry Kane at Tottenham and Victor Osimhen of Napoli. Both Kane and Osimhen cost more than £100 million but that is the foundation for Pochettino to revive Tottenham's attacking strength.

Goalkeepers Kepa and Mendy are not trusted, so Mr. Pochettino is targeting Andre Onana of Inter Milan or David Raya of Brentford. Finally, there is defensive midfielder Declan Rice of West Ham United. Owner Boehly affirmed that he will not spare any money for Coach Pochettino to rebuild the Chelsea squad. Veteran midfielder Raheem Sterling said that Coach Pochettino is the person Chelsea really needs at the moment because he is the person who can control the team that previous coaches could not do.
