Indonesian press recalled the Indonesian team's most recent loss to the Vietnamese team with a score of 0-2 at My Dinh Stadium on January 9, 2023, to warn coach Shin Tae-yong and his team not to be subjective.

Striker Nguyen Tien Linh (22) scored a double for the Vietnamese team in the recent victory over Indonesia at My Dinh Stadium.

That was the match in the second leg of the semi-finals of the AFF Cup 2022 (renamed the ASEAN Championship from 2024). At that time, striker Nguyen Tien Linh scored two goals in the 3rd and 47th minutes to help the Vietnamese team win 2-0 (the first leg at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium ended in a 0-0 draw), thereby winning a ticket to the final (losing to the Thai team with a final score of 2-3).

This is the last tournament that Coach Park Hang-seo leads the Vietnam team before saying goodbye on January 31, 2023 when his contract expires. From March 1, 2023, the Vietnam team appointed Coach Philippe Troussier to lead the team until now.

However, under the French strategist, the Vietnamese team recently suffered two consecutive losses against the Indonesian team (both with a score of 0-1), including the loss in the group stage of the 2023 Asian Cup in Qatar (January 19) and the most recent match on March 21 in the second qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

In the history of meetings at My Dinh Stadium, the last time the Indonesian team beat the Vietnamese team was in the group stage of the AFF Cup in 2004 with a score of 3-0. Since then, in 6 times coming to My Dinh Stadium, the Indonesian team has drawn 4 matches and lost 2 matches. The 2 losses include 1 friendly match (score 2-3) and a 0-2 loss in the second leg of the AFF Cup 2022 semi-finals.

During this time, the Indonesian team also lost 0-4 to the Vietnamese team in Dubai, UAE in the second leg of the 2nd qualifying round of the 2022 World Cup in Asia (lost 1-3 in the first leg in Bali).

The upcoming meeting (March 26) is considered to have a lot of hope for coach Shin Tae-yong and his team to break the "curse" of not winning at My Dinh Stadium for over 20 years. The Indonesian press is particularly interested, because the team from the archipelago has recently played very well since the 2023 Asian Cup when they entered the round of 16 for the first time and had 2 consecutive victories against the Vietnamese team.

The Indonesian team (in black) has not won at My Dinh Stadium for over 20 years.

However, after the latest victory on March 21, the Indonesian team, in an excited mood, traveled to Hanoi by private plane to prepare to conquer My Dinh Stadium, but suddenly faced a serious force crisis due to injuries, illnesses and penalty cards. Coach Shin Tae-yong called up 3 players to supplement, including goalkeeper Ernando Ari, defender Muhammad Ferarri and midfielder Rachmat Irianto.

"This is a very worrying point. Coach Shin Tae-yong's team has to patch up its forces, because 7-8 players who are playing well are injured or sick, in addition to the penalty card of center-back Sandy Walsh.

Not to mention, My Dinh Stadium has long been a place where it is not easy to find favorable results even if the team has the best force. The Vietnamese team is under great pressure after losing matches, they will certainly play a decisive match to regain victory. Therefore, if the Indonesian team is not careful, they may face unfavorable results here again," Bolatimes (Indonesia) expressed.
