On May 29, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) forecast that Typhoon Mawar would affect Okinawa Prefecture in the southernmost part of the country on May 31, and warned of the risk of rough seas, high waves, strong winds and heavy rain due to the storm's influence.
The JMA said that if there is no change in direction compared to the information updated as of the morning of May 29, Typhoon Mawar will enter the southwestern part of Okinawa Prefecture. As of the morning of May 29, Typhoon Mawar from the eastern Philippines was moving north at a speed of 10 km/h. Wind speed near the center of the storm gradually increased from 162 km/h on the evening of May 28 to 216 km/h on the morning of May 29.
According to the JMA forecast, Typhoon Mawar will approach the Sakishima Islands, off the main island of Okinawa, from May 31. The JMA warned that the slow-moving nature of the storm could mean severe weather conditions could persist for a long time, while the high-pressure system it generates could disrupt atmospheric conditions in many areas across Japan.
On May 29, the main island of Okinawa could see waves as high as 5 meters in Okinawa and as high as 7 meters near the Sakishima Islands. Heavy rains are expected in both eastern and western Japan in the coming days. The JMA has advised people to be on guard against landslides and flooding in low-lying areas, rising rivers and lightning.
