On May 30, the workshop "Preserving and promoting the cultural heritage value of Quang Duc ceramics" organized by the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Yen had the participation of many scientists and ceramic experts nationwide.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Nguyen Le Vu - Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Phu Yen - said that Quang Duc pottery village (An Thach commune, Tuy An district) has a history of over 300 years.
Raw materials for making pottery are mainly taken from neighboring areas such as An Dinh clay, O Loan lagoon blood cockles, and firewood from Cai River.
There are two types of pottery: glazed and unglazed, with rich patterns. From the 17th to the 20th century, Quang Duc pottery was widely consumed, not only in Phu Yen but also in the Central, Central Highlands, and Southern regions.
“Since the mid-20th century, Quang Duc pottery village has gradually faded away, many techniques have been lost, there are no more kilns or potters. Realizing the cultural value of this pottery line, agencies and individuals have made efforts to collect, preserve and achieve some results.
The workshop was held to comprehensively assess the value of Quang Duc ceramic heritage, propose solutions for conservation and promotion, effectively implement the Phu Yen province tourism development project, exploit the values of cultural tourism resources, and create resources for socio-economic development," said Mr. Vu.

Mr. Tran Thanh Hung - Deputy Head of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department, Chairman of the UNESCO Club for Research and Conservation of Phu Yen Antiquities - said that preserving Quang Duc pottery is not about restoring a craft village or bringing products to compete in the market.
"But if Quang Duc pottery is successfully crafted, it will be meaningful in proving to Vietnamese and international researchers a unique pottery-making technique. From there, preserving it in a way that builds Quang Duc into a tourist destination, located in the local tourist complex" - Mr. Hung suggested.
Linking Quang Duc pottery with craft village tourism
With the presentation “Quang Duc Pottery - Heritage, Tourism and Architecture”, architect Le Quang Thanh - director of planning design at Huni Architectes - said that craft village heritage tourism is becoming an effective model for cultural preservation and sustainable economic development.
Quang Duc pottery village, with its favorable location, endemic materials and traditional techniques, has the potential to become a typical cultural and creative tourism destination in the South Central Coast.
Located near the key tourist route of Phu Yen (Mang Lang church - Ganh Da Dia - O Loan lagoon), the restoration of the pottery village will contribute to perfecting the tourism ecosystem, creating a unique cultural highlight for the area.

The craft village tourism model, if properly organized, will bring many values such as: visiting the production process, experiencing manufacturing, shopping for products, enjoying art performances, participating in workshops and educational activities associated with local materials.
According to Mr. Thanh, this model has been successful in many famous pottery villages such as Ontayaki (Japan), Incheon (Korea), Thuy Ly (Taiwan) and Bat Trang (Vietnam).
“To revive the pottery village associated with tourism, there needs to be a multi-dimensional socialization strategy, in which the state ensures mechanisms and infrastructure; businesses, the private sector and research institutes take on the role of creativity and value exploitation,” architect Le Quang Thanh shared.
