Hanoi Since January 8, patients treated at Bach Mai Hospital do not have to wait a whole week to get an MRI or gastroscopy, thanks to the hospital's recent purchase of equipment worth more than 200 billion VND.
The information was announced by Associate Professor Dao Xuan Co, Director of Bach Mai Hospital, at the inauguration ceremony of medical equipment systems serving medical examination and treatment on the afternoon of January 8.
The lack of machinery and equipment in recent times has made medical examination and treatment at Bach Mai difficult. There were times when patients had to wait for a whole week to get an MRI scan. Basic diagnoses such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy were delayed and could not be performed due to lack of machinery.
The reason, according to Mr. Co, before 2020, nearly 100% of the equipment of major centers in Bach Mai such as Dien Quang Center, Nuclear Medicine and Oncology Center, Digestive Center, were from the form of socialization. After 2020, many joint venture contracts expired, many projects encountered legal problems. Therefore, most of the equipment related to digestive endoscopy, CT, MRI, PET/CT, Gammar knife... had to be covered up, broken, and unusable.
In addition, in 2021-2022 and early 2023, bidding for the purchase of medical supplies, testing chemicals, and medical equipment at medical facilities nationwide will face many difficulties due to the lack of clear legal corridors. This reality leads to hospitals lacking equipment and supplies.
"There was a time when the entire hospital with thousands of patients only had two working MRI machines," said Mr. Co.

In the above context, the Government and the Ministry of Health issued many documents to remove policy difficulties. The hospital continuously bid for procurement, many new equipment were successfully purchased, with a total value of over 200 billion VND. Among them, some modern equipment such as 7 endoscopic surgery systems, 19 digestive endoscopy systems; more than 120 gastric and colon endoscopes of various types.
Bach Mai also purchased new bone density X-ray machines, 16 color ultrasound machines, and 9 digital X-ray systems. Equipment for the rehabilitation center and equipment for two operating rooms such as surgical lights, operating tables, anesthesia machines, monitors, etc. were added. Notably, for the first time, the hospital successfully bid to purchase 4 1.5 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging systems and 2 32-slice/rotation computed tomography scanners at the same time.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Cong Long, Director of the Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliary Center, Bach Mai Hospital, said that 800 to 1,000 gastrointestinal endoscopy procedures are performed every day, with the most lesions detected in the colon, stomach, and esophagus. When there were no machines, patients had to make appointments, which was prolonged and affected their health. Now, machines meet the demand, and patients can be examined, have an endoscopy, and go home the same day.
"Bach Mai was also granted an investment budget of 1,100 billion VND, including over 300 billion for basic construction and 790 billion for equipment purchases. In the near future, the hospital will continue to purchase equipment to serve patients," Associate Professor Co said.
