Recently, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases admitted a male patient, nearly 60 years old, in critical condition.

Mr. T., a construction worker from Dong Anh, Hanoi , was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of right-sided chest pain and severe shortness of breath, especially when inhaling. The prolonged chest pain became unbearable, forcing his family to rush him to the emergency room in the middle of the night.

The doctor is examining the patient.

Based on the examination, doctors diagnosed Mr. T. with pneumothorax, a dangerous condition where air enters the pleural cavity, preventing the lung from expanding and causing severe shortness of breath. He received timely emergency treatment including the insertion of a drainage tube and respiratory support.

After conducting comprehensive tests and examinations, doctors discovered that his lungs had many dilated vesicles and perforated alveoli, creating air pockets that caused his lungs to collapse, leading to respiratory failure. The cause of the illness was believed to be his history of heavy smoking.

Mr. T. is a heavy smoker, averaging about one pack a day for many years. Although he recently reduced his smoking due to declining health, the damage from smoking has silently accumulated in his lungs, leading to serious problems such as pneumothorax.

Pneumothorax occurs when air enters the pleural space, causing the lung to collapse and stop expanding normally. This can lead to respiratory failure and, if not treated promptly, can be fatal.

In Mr. T.'s case, the doctor decided to perform thoracoscopic surgery to definitively resolve the condition and prevent the risk of future recurrence of pneumothorax.

Mr. T. is not the only case of someone experiencing health problems due to smoking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), smoking causes more than 8 million deaths worldwide each year, with millions more suffering from respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

Besides the direct harm to smokers, passive smoking (inhaling smoke from others) also causes many dangerous diseases.

Another case is Ms. Pham Thi M. (60 years old, Dan Phuong, Hanoi), who contracted chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) due to living in an environment with a lot of cigarette smoke.

Ms. Mui said that her husband had been addicted to cigarettes for over 30 years, and she had been exposed to secondhand smoke for a long time. As a result, she discovered she had chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and is now facing symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

Ms. M's situation serves as a reminder of the serious harm that tobacco smoke causes to public health, especially for those living in smoky environments who lack the means to protect themselves.

To protect your health and minimize the harm caused by tobacco, quitting smoking is the best solution. Although it may be difficult, quitting smoking offers many health benefits. After quitting, the body will begin to recover, reducing the risk of respiratory, cardiovascular, and cancerous diseases.

According to doctors, quitting smoking as early as possible will help improve lung function, reduce lung damage, and stop the progression of the disease.

Smoking not only causes dangerous diseases for smokers but also seriously affects those around them and the environment.

The case of patients Mr. T. and Mrs. M. serves as a warning about the devastating effects of tobacco, especially on the respiratory system. Quitting smoking is the only way to protect one's own health and the health of the community.

Smoking causes a range of dangerous respiratory diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, and pneumothorax.

According to health experts, cigarettes contain thousands of harmful substances, many of which are inflammatory, damaging the lungs and causing a gradual deterioration of lung tissue.

Long-term lung damage from exposure to chemicals in cigarette smoke can lead to many serious problems, such as:

Chronic bronchitis: This occurs when the airways become inflamed and produce too much mucus, making breathing difficult.

Emphysema: A condition that causes the alveoli to dilate, leading to gradual destruction of the lungs and reduced gas exchange capacity.

Lung cancer: Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, one of the cancers with the highest mortality rates.
