Accordingly, the female patient had a history of good health. About 5 days before being admitted to the hospital, the patient had symptoms of mild weakness in her left arm and difficulty holding things. In the following days, the patient's condition progressed rapidly, causing her legs to gradually weaken and she was unable to walk.
The patient was transferred to Thong Nhat General Hospital with weak limbs, difficulty grasping and swallowing. Notably, just 1 day after admission, the patient's weakness and paralysis of limbs progressed very quickly. The patient almost completely lost the ability to move his limbs, had severe swallowing disorders, could not eat or drink, and had to have a gastric tube inserted for feeding.
Doctor Nguyen Dinh Thai said that through examination and necessary tests, doctors diagnosed the patient with acute Guillain-Barré syndrome. This is a peripheral neuropathy caused by an immune disorder, very rare but extremely dangerous, and can affect life if not treated promptly.
The patient then underwent continuous plasma exchange for 5 days. Each day, 16 units of plasma were exchanged. This is an advanced treatment method that helps eliminate antibodies that attack the nervous system, preventing progressive paralysis.
Up to now, after 5 days of active treatment, the patient's muscle strength has improved well, up to level 4/5, able to stand up, walk and perform basic activities on his own.
According to Dr. Thai, because the patient still has swallowing problems, he will continue to receive supportive treatment and physical therapy. It is expected that the patient will be discharged in the next few days.
