On November 17, Hue Central Hospital held a discharge ceremony for the child who received the 5th successful liver transplant at the unit.
This is also the first liver transplant in which the entire process - from organ harvesting, liver division to transplantation - was performed by the hospital's own team, marking an important step forward in the hospital's ability to master liver transplant techniques.
Patient Nguyen Tuong V. (2 years old, from Quang Ngai ) has congenital biliary atresia - a rare disease with a rate of 1/5,000 to 1/20,000 newborns, often leading to biliary cirrhosis and liver failure if not treated promptly. Although he had surgery when he was only 2 months old, his condition still worsened and he had to have a liver transplant to sustain his life.
On October 7, upon receiving information that there was an organ donor at Cho Ray Hospital (HCMC), Hue Central Hospital immediately activated the consultation process and mobilized human resources during the night.
The team quickly went to Ho Chi Minh City to separate the liver from the donor and transport it by air to Hue.
The transplant took place from the afternoon of October 8 to 3 a.m. on October 9. The new liver has good blood circulation and stable bile secretion. After surgery, the patient recovered smoothly without any complications.

Previously, the hospital's first liver transplants had professional support from the 108 Military Hospital. With this fifth transplant, the Hue medical team was completely autonomous in technique, demonstrating the remarkable maturity of the Central region's organ transplant center.
Hue Central Hospital would like to thank the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center, Cho Ray Hospital, the traffic police of Ho Chi Minh City and Hue City, Tan Son Nhat and Phu Bai Airports for their support in transporting the donated organs. The hospital is especially grateful to the donor and his family for their humanitarian gesture that helped open up life opportunities for many patients.
As a special-class hospital, Hue Central Hospital is currently one of the largest organ transplant centers in the country with more than 2,500 successful organ and tissue transplants. This is also the only facility in the Central region that can perform all three heart, liver and kidney transplant techniques, contributing to bringing Vietnamese medicine to the regional level.
