A symbol of innovation

Editor's Note: April 30, 1975, is a significant milestone in the history of the Vietnamese nation, marking the reunification of the country and ushering in a new era of development.

Over the past 50 years, Ho Chi Minh City has risen to become a leading economic , financial, and scientific-technological center in the country, with a series of projects that symbolize its aspiration for progress.

The projects mentioned not only demonstrate Ho Chi Minh City's remarkable development but also reflect a long-term vision towards a smart, sustainable city.

In anticipation of the momentous 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country, Ho Chi Minh City is organizing a selection process for 50 outstanding construction projects in the city.

4 important criteria

These are construction projects and works that have left their mark over the past 50 years, as well as exemplary projects registered for city-level emulation; they have had a significant impact on the lives of the people and the development of Ho Chi Minh City.

The 50 outstanding construction projects selected must meet at least one of four criteria: scale of Group B or higher; identified for investment in resolutions of the City Party Congress over the years; closely associated with the image of Ho Chi Minh City, awarded prestigious national and international prizes, with the participation, contribution, and dedication of many sectors of the population; and having a regional linkage nature, creating a great impetus for the development of Ho Chi Minh City in particular and the whole country in general.

To select the 50 projects, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee established a Selection Council consisting of 22 members, chaired by Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee Bui Xuan Cuong.

The Council is tasked with advising the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on issuing a decision to select 50 outstanding construction projects, serving as the basis for implementing the selection process; and monitoring and reporting on the results of implementation by relevant departments and agencies in organizing councils for construction projects under their management according to four criteria.

The Standing Committee of the Selection Council (Department of Construction) compiles and reports the implementation results of the relevant departments and agencies to the council members for review and evaluation...

The mark of the emulation movement

To date, Ho Chi Minh City has compiled a list of 61 outstanding city-level emulation programs, works, and projects (referred to as projects) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of Southern Vietnam and the reunification of the country.

The 61 projects across 6 sectors, completed or commenced by April 30, 2025, will not only transform the urban landscape but also bring many practical benefits, meeting urban development needs and helping Ho Chi Minh City become a smart and livable city.

These projects create momentum to attract domestic and foreign investment, enhance international competitiveness; and improve people's lives by contributing to reducing traffic congestion and upgrading healthcare, education, culture, and sports services.

The socio-cultural sector includes 21 projects, notably the construction of cultural institutions such as a children's cultural center, a symphony, music, and dance theater, a multi-purpose performing arts center, and the Phu Tho circus and multi-purpose performance venue.

Notable sports infrastructure construction projects include the new Phan Dinh Phung Sports Center, the upgrading of Thong Nhat Stadium, the renovation of Phu Tho Gymnasium, and Hoa Lu Stadium. Alongside these are the construction of 4,500 classrooms and a sustainable poverty reduction program.

The economic sector has 6 projects. Among them, the most notable is the project to establish an International Financial Center, aiming to transform Ho Chi Minh City into a regional and global financial hub; attracting major financial institutions and creating opportunities for strong economic cooperation and development.

Many projects are close to the community and benefit the people.

There are 21 outstanding city-level emulation projects in the urban sector. Among them, the An Phu intersection and projects to reduce traffic congestion in the Tan Son Nhat airport area will be completed by April 30th.

Around the same time, several other key projects will commence, such as the Ho Chi Minh City - Moc Bai expressway, the completion of Ring Road 2 and Ring Road 4, Thu Thiem 4 bridge, Thu Thiem pedestrian bridge, Can Gio bridge... In addition, there is also the Can Gio international transshipment port project.

Regarding the housing development program, Ho Chi Minh City plans to complete the relocation and demolition of 14 severely damaged apartment buildings, repair 246 dilapidated apartment buildings; complete the investment procedures for the construction of 35,000 social housing units; and complete compensation and land clearance for 2,780 houses on and along canals and waterways.

A series of parks in Districts 12, Binh Tan, Thu Duc City, and Cu Chi District will also be newly built or renovated, adding more than 108 hectares by the end of 2025.

The remaining projects fall under the fields of science and technology, innovation; administrative reform; and national defense, security, and foreign affairs.

These projects not only demonstrate Ho Chi Minh City's remarkable development but also reflect a long-term vision towards a modern, smart, and sustainable city. They represent not only construction achievements but also strategic foresight, symbolizing innovation, integration, and Ho Chi Minh City's aspirations for the future.

Elaborate preparation

The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has established a Support Team for the Selection Council consisting of 10 members, headed by Mr. Nguyen Minh Thai, Deputy Head of the Construction Licensing Department of the Department of Construction. The team's nhiệm vụ is to advise on reviewing and updating guiding documents and criteria related to various fields to resolve any difficulties or obstacles that may arise during the selection process, along with other important tasks.

Relevant departments and agencies are tasked with proactively organizing selection committees for construction projects within their respective areas of management, based on four criteria. The selection results are then submitted to the Department of Construction for compilation and reporting to the selection committee for review and approval before being presented to the General Selection Committee for final approval.

A proud journey from the past to the future.

Ho Chi Minh City also selected 50 events, people, achievements... that have made the city named after President Ho Chi Minh so proud.

Specifically, the selection process will honor 50 outstanding individuals who have contributed significantly to the construction, protection, and development of Ho Chi Minh City. This aims to recognize and commend their effective contributions to the city's development over the past 50 years; and to encourage the people to continue to demonstrate dynamism and creativity, to continue working and contributing in various ways, creating valuable achievements to meet the city's development needs in the future.

Ho Chi Minh City also selected 50 outstanding works in the fields of literature and art; and 50 outstanding events and activities of the city. In addition, it selected 50 outstanding businesses with key products and brands of Ho Chi Minh City, creating motivation to encourage businesses to actively innovate, aiming for sustainable product development, contributing to enhancing their position and competitive advantage in the market...
