A heartwarming breakfast at Phu Dong Market.

(GLO) - For many people in the mountainous region, going to Phu Dong Market (Tran Kien Street, Pleiku Ward, Gia Lai Province) to buy breakfast for their families or enjoy a delicious and heartwarming breakfast has become a habit. Walking around the market, I understood even more why the locals call this place a "breakfast paradise."

The breakfast food section at Phù Đổng Market has 26 vendors offering a diverse and rich selection of dishes. Each small, simple stall offers diners unique flavors, from steaming bowls of pork knuckle noodle soup and beef noodle soup, crispy Vietnamese pancakes, fragrant Northern-style rice rolls, steaming boxes of mung bean sticky rice and corn sticky rice, to sweet treats like mung bean sweet soup and eye-catching flan… In the cool morning air, the lively chatter and warm greetings bring people closer together.

Smiling and greeting me warmly, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Duoc (No. 2 Truong Chinh Street, Pleiku Ward), the owner of Bon Nhat restaurant, quickly stirred the broth in her pot while saying, "What would you like to eat, ma'am? Pork knuckle noodle soup, beef noodle soup, Quang noodles, or Northern pho?"

Seeing me inhale deeply and praise the aroma, Mrs. Duoc recounted: “I usually wake up at 4 a.m. to prepare the ingredients, especially simmering pork trotters and bones until they are tender and flavorful. To get a clear, subtly fragrant broth, I often add roasted shallots and crushed ginger. I’ve been in this business for over 30 years, selling since the days of the temporary market. On good days, I sell more than 10 kg of various types of noodles and pho; the prices are reasonable, currently around 30,000 VND per bowl. In the last few years, my daughter has been helping me out.”

Listening to our story, Mr. Le Ngoc Can (Group 6, Pleiku Ward), the customer sitting next to us, smiled as he enjoyed his beef noodle soup. “I’ve been a regular customer of Bon Nhat restaurant for over 10 years now. The breakfast food here is delicious and varied, and the owner is friendly, so we have many regular customers,” Mr. Can shared.

After strolling around the market, I stopped at the sticky rice stall of Mrs. Trinh Thi Hoa and Mr. Dang Van Tuan (Group 1, Pleiku Ward). It was past 7 a.m., and there were quite a few customers, some buying corn sticky rice, others buying mung bean sticky rice, and some savory sticky rice. Mrs. Hoa and her husband were busy, one quickly packing the sticky rice into boxes, the other quickly handing out orders, but they still managed to chat with customers with bright smiles.

Seeing me ask detailed questions about each type of sticky rice, Mrs. Ngo Thi Hue (Group 8, Pleiku Ward), a customer buying sticky rice, smiled and said: "Is this your first time buying sticky rice from Mrs. Hoa? The sticky rice is delicious; many people become regular customers after their first purchase. My family always comes here whenever we want to eat sticky rice."

According to Mrs. Hoa, she and her husband have been selling sticky rice at Phu Dong market for nearly 20 years. Thanks to this stall, they have a steady income to take care of their children. Although life is still difficult, they are content with their harmonious marriage and warm family life.

Speaking to a reporter, Mr. Trinh Dinh Duc, a security officer (Hoa Lu-Phu Dong Market Management Board), said: He has worked at the Hoa Lu-Phu Dong Market Management Board since 2013. Previously, wholesale traders sold their goods at a temporary market in Group 7, Phu Dong Ward (now Pleiku Ward), but since 2016 they have been relocated to this area. The stalls are neatly arranged and clean, the vendors provide attentive and thoughtful service, and the walkways are clear, so many people still often come here for breakfast. Having breakfast at the market not only warms the stomachs of the locals but also provides them with positive energy thanks to the genuine hospitality of the people in the mountain town.
