Recently, an authorized BYD dealership in the southern region revealed that the M9 will soon be brought to Vietnam. According to this dealership, the car will officially launch in the Vietnamese market in September or October with an expected price of 1.5 - 1.7 billion VND. If this price is accurate, it will be BYD's most expensive model ever in Vietnam. The BYD M9 MPV is essentially the export version of the Xia model currently sold in the Chinese market. The first international market to receive this model is Mexico. The car was officially introduced in Mexico on June 25, 2025.
The BYD M9 still shares the same chassis platform as the Xia. The car has dimensions of 5,145 x 1,970 x 1,805 mm (length x width x height) and a wheelbase of 3,045 mm. Compared to the Xia for the Chinese market, the BYD M9 has been redesigned to suit international customers. Accordingly, the car is equipped with a large radiator grille with vertical or horizontal chrome bars. Next to it are multi-spoke alloy wheels, traditional door handles and taillights designed across the rear of the car. The rear trunk door is attached with the letter "M9" on the right and the embossed letter "BYD" under the taillights. In the Mexican market, this large MPV model has equipment such as LED lighting system from front to rear, electric sliding doors on the side, electric opening/closing trunk door and 18-inch alloy wheels. The car's luggage compartment has a standard volume of 570 liters, increasing to 2,036 liters when folding the two rear seats. Inside, the M9 adopts BYD's latest Dynasty interior design language, inspired by traditional Chinese "Four Waters Returning to the Hall" architecture. The interior is arranged in a dashboard style that surrounds the occupants, with color combinations such as brown-beige or gray-blue-beige.
Like BYD's latest models, the M9 is also extremely well-equipped with leather seats, a 15.6-inch infotainment screen that rotates 90 degrees, karaoke function, a multi-functional steering wheel wrapped in artificial leather, a digital instrument panel, two captain's chairs in the second row, and more than 34 storage compartments. BYD's 3D Smart Cabin system allows Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, split screen for using multiple apps at the same time, 3D modeling to control in-car features, remote connection via smartphone and “Hi BYD” voice control assistant supporting both front rows. The heart of the BYD M9 is its plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) DM-i, featuring a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 115 horsepower. This engine is paired with a powerful 268-horsepower electric motor. The combined output of this powertrain is nearly 400 horsepower and a maximum torque of 474 Nm. BYD claims an average fuel consumption of 17.8 km/liter (approximately 5.6 liters/100 km). After a full charge of the 20 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, the car can travel 95 km without using the gasoline engine. The total driving range is up to 945 km.
The car's battery can charge from 30% to 80% in 18 minutes and supports VTOL technology, allowing it to power outdoor electronic devices or even the indoor power grid when needed. Additionally, the car has four driving modes: Normal, Eco, Sport , and Snow. Finally, notable safety features include 6 airbags (including curtain airbags for all 3 rows of seats), disc brakes, ABS anti-lock braking system, hydraulic brake assist, deceleration control, traction control, vehicle stability control, brake disc drying, anti-rollover, hill start assist and downhill assist. Unfortunately, the car lacks active safety features (ADAS). Upon its arrival in Vietnam, the BYD M9 will compete with the Kia Carnival, GAC M8, and Volkswagen Viloran. In the Chinese market, this model has sold quite well, with 2,611 units sold in May 2025. BYD is leveraging this growth momentum to advance its international strategy.
