Singer Doan Truong has worn nearly 50 Ao Dai in about 30/70 countries he has traveled to. He also owns a collection of 120 world flags; 300 refrigerator magnets (decals, stickers) printed with images of many places around the world and 150 models, symbols, logos... of cities around the world. |
“ Traveling is to see the vast world, discover new things, practice speaking the native language, bring happiness and especially for me, travelling also helps improve health, forget about illness. When I travel, I am physically active all day, eat well, sleep better, making my spirit excited, refreshed and happy. Therefore, this is the most useful investment for myself!” - singer Doan Truong shared with Dong Nai Newspaper and Radio and Television.
"Backpacking" or "luxury check-in"?
* Is your travel style based on luxury or backpacking experience?
- During my trips, whether I travel alone or on a package tour (advantages: convenience, safety, simple visa application procedures), I only need to “eat well, dress warmly, and sleep well” to ensure my health during the journey to a foreign land. I like wandering around small alleys, enjoying local street food , exploring historical sites, and chatting with locals because I can speak Russian, English, Chinese, and Korean.
Don’t force yourself to “check-in” to trendy, famous places. Be comfortable with your personality (what you like, what you want) but pay attention and be careful about your health. For example, I have osteoarthritis in my knees and varicose veins in my legs, so I avoid climbing, hiking, and going to harsh mountainous areas with thin air...
However, I still want to explore many new lands and learn more cultures. Many historical works and natural landscapes in the world have been gradually destroyed by natural disasters and "man-made" instability such as war, religious conflicts, embargoes... so I always keep in mind: "Go while you still can and still have the strength!".

Singer Doan Truong explores the pyramid complex in Egypt. |
* What are some memorable experiences you have had?
- The most tiring trip was in 2019, when I was preparing to enter Israel, the missile alarm sounded, forcing all passengers to evacuate urgently. The visa was only valid for 3 days for the safety of foreign tourists. We were advised to pay attention to the siren when visiting to find shelter at any time.
When I arrived at the Church of the Nativity in the ancient city of Bethlehem on the West Bank of Palestine, I and thousands of tourists crowded together in a line for more than 3 hours to go down an extremely small and narrow tunnel to see with our own eyes the place believed to be the manger where Jesus was born in the cave of Bethlehem.
Another memorable experience was arriving at the most beautiful and romantic sunset viewing spot in Oia village on the paradise island of Santorini (Greece) 4 hours early just to wait a few minutes to take photos. Unfortunately, while it was so crowded, all the cash in my bag was stolen by a thief, so from then on I was more careful than ever!
For over 20 years, singer Doan Truong has actively promoted the image and people of Vietnam through the symbol of the ao dai and the red flag with yellow star to international friends through each trip.
Tips for saving money
* What are your experiences and advice for young people regarding working - saving/accumulating - traveling?
- During my time as an artist and as a management expert in international corporations, I always had the habit of proactively setting aside a portion of my annual income for travel. Specifically, 10% for the first 10 years, 20% for the next 10 years... In recent years, as a travel blogger, I have received partial support from many travel companies and brands and have been accompanied on trips.

In the Sahara desert in North Africa in late 2024. |
You need to save for a trip including basic expenses such as: airfare, visa fees, accommodation, transportation, insurance; additional expenses such as shopping, experiential services such as scuba diving, cable car, paragliding, camel riding, skiing, hot air ballooning, helicopter, ethnic costume rental, museum and cave entrance tickets, art show tickets...
If you travel by yourself, you need to have the skills to plan and budget for the trip in detail, especially knowing how to control finances, avoid unexpected problems and accept unexpected incidents (I once... fell asleep at Dubai Airport; got lost on Mount Titlis in Switzerland, forcing search and rescue teams to search at night).
Traveling on a tour helps you plan your expenses more stably and with less risk. Adventure experience, foreign language skills, and many travel tips will help you avoid tourist "traps" such as: scams, enticements, solicitations, and haggling... and you can explore and experience things on your own outside the tour program using public transportation in foreign countries.
* Thank you and wish you many more meaningful trips!
