The ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement between Israel and Hamas will officially take effect from 8:30 a.m. on January 19 local time (1:30 p.m. on the same day Vietnam time), thereby opening up hope for a long-term peace prospect in the Gaza Strip.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, in the first phase of the deal, Hamas will release 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for 1,890 Palestinian detainees. 600 trucks will also be allowed to enter the Gaza Strip every day, including 50 fuel trucks, to address the worsening humanitarian situation there.
However, earlier in the day, the Israeli Justice Ministry said it would only release 737 Palestinians currently held in the country. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asked Hamas to provide a list of hostages to be released by January 19 before any prisoner swap takes place.
Mr. Netanyahu also affirmed that the ceasefire agreement is only temporary and Israel will not stop until it achieves all its goals in the conflict.
Meanwhile, the Qatari Foreign Ministry advised Gaza residents to be cautious and wait for instructions from official sources regarding the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.
This is the second ceasefire signed after 15 months of conflict in the Gaza Strip, a war that has killed more than 50,000 Palestinians and left the territory in ruins.
Fighting continued before the ceasefire officially took effect. Gaza's health authorities said on January 18 that at least 23 people had been killed in Israeli attacks in the past 24 hours.
