It takes 20 years for English to become a second language in schools.

The project to make English a second language in schools has a 20-year implementation period and is deployed in 3 phases.

The Prime Minister has just issued Decision No. 2371/QD-TTg dated October 27 approving the Project "Making English the second language in schools for the period 2025 - 2035, with a vision to 2045".

English is required from grade 1.

The project's objective is to make English the second language in schools in Vietnam; English is used in teaching, communication, management and educational activities of schools, forming an ecosystem of English use in educational institutions from level 1 to level 3.

English will be taught as compulsory from grade 1 instead of grade 3 as at present.

The project is applied in all preschool, general education, university, vocational education and continuing education facilities nationwide.

According to estimates by the Ministry of Education and Training, the project will impact about 50,000 educational institutions with nearly 30 million children, pupils, and about 1 million managers and teachers at all levels, fields of study, and training sectors.

The project implementation period is 20 years (2025 - 2045), implemented in 3 main phases. In which, phase 1 (2025 - 2030) will build the foundation and standardize, the foundation for English to be used regularly and systematically in the educational environment.

This phase aims for 100% of general education facilities to teach English compulsorily from grade 1 (currently this regulation applies from grade 3 but many localities still lack teachers); 100% of preschool facilities in cities and urban areas... to introduce children to English...

Phase 2 (2030 - 2035) expands and strengthens, promoting the use of English more frequently...

Phase 3 (2035 - 2045) will be completed and enhanced, English will be used naturally, developing an ecosystem of using English in the educational environment, communication and school administration...

About 22,000 English teachers are needed.

Regarding resource conditions, according to the Ministry of Education and Training, after the project is issued, central and local agencies and organizations are responsible for implementation.

In particular, preschool education needs 1 English teacher in each educational institution, it is expected that there will be 12,000 English teachers in public preschool education institutions.

For primary school, to make English compulsory from grade 1 will require nearly 10,000 more English teachers.

In addition, it is necessary to train and foster English and professional and pedagogical skills for at least 200,000 English teachers from now until 2035.
