Green Highlands - a big catleya brand in B'Lao land

Bao Loc - the land where orchids spread their fragrance and show their colors, where millions of orchid branches of various varieties are blooming. Among those orchid colors, there is a farm that has successfully built a brand with the catleya line.

Passion for colorful catleya orchids

“Cattleya orchids are easy to grow and care for, and their flowers are large, beautiful, and colorful. Orchid growers generally favor this species of orchid because of its diverse colors,” said Dao Thi Thanh Dung, owner of Cao Nguyen Xanh orchid garden. Dung and her husband, Hoang Thai Ha, have been growing various types of orchids for 20 years before switching to specializing in cattleya.

“In the past, the family’s orchid garden had a variety of different orchid species, wild orchids, catleya... But in 2018, recognizing the market trend as well as sharing information within the Bao Loc orchid growing community, Cao Nguyen Xanh switched to specializing in catleya. We hope to build a diverse catleya seed farm, serving all customer needs for this beautiful orchid line,” Ms. Dung reiterated. And, choosing to specialize in one orchid species has helped Cao Nguyen Xanh develop in the right direction. Currently, the garden has become a large catleya seed farm in Bao Loc orchid land.

“Cao Nguyen Xanh imports varieties from countries famous for catleya such as Taiwan and Thailand. We bring them back to the farm, test them, and standardize the cultivation process, evaluate the ability to flower, color, and adaptability to Vietnam. Currently, the farm has over 200 different catleya varieties, producing 200,000 orchid seedlings each year. What is special is that Cao Nguyen Xanh only supplies varieties to large gardens and distribution partners, not retail. We hope to establish ourselves as a large garden specializing in importing and propagating catleya in Vietnam,” Ms. Dao Thi Thanh Dung proudly shared. Cao Nguyen Xanh's process of importing and propagating large quantities of catleya orchids by tissue culture, extraction, and propagation has helped the farm gain a foothold in the Vietnamese orchid village.

Closely manage orchids through monitoring systems

With a large farm, with hundreds of different orchid varieties and hundreds of colors, scientific management of the orchid garden, ensuring no confusion is a mandatory requirement. Ms. Dung recalls: “When importing orchids to Vietnam, each batch has a code. But the catleya plants before flowering are very similar, to check the flower color and shape, customers have to search online. To manage clearly, avoid confusion as well as help customers make accurate choices, we have printed hundreds of indicator boards placed on top of the plant lots. On the boards are pictures of blooming orchids, varieties, origins..., ensuring that customers only need to look to grasp all the information. I find that managing orchids through the code system and description boards helps gardeners as well as customers very conveniently and effectively.”

Cao Nguyen Xanh specializes in providing catleya orchid varieties, which is also a direction to contribute to building the orchid growing community of B'Lao land. Mr. Hoang Thai Ha - Mrs. Dung's husband is an active member of Bao Loc Orchid Association. He shared that when specializing in one orchid species, gardeners cultivate better, more intensively, serve customers better, and at the same time, do not compete with other gardeners. On the contrary, he is an active connector, bringing orchid lovers to diverse orchid gardens everywhere. His goal, as well as that of many orchid lovers, is to build a sustainable orchid growing - orchid loving community.

Ms. Hoang Thi Xuyen - Chairwoman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Ward 3, Bao Loc, assessed that Cao Nguyen Xanh orchid garden is a very familiar address for orchid lovers in the area as well as in other provinces. Ms. Dung and Mr. Ha's families are good farmers with high incomes, and are the core in building the Bao Loc orchid brand. The direction of specialized production and digital management of Cao Nguyen Xanh is also a model that Ward 3 wants to replicate for farmers in the area, towards sustainable farming.
