Charlie Kirk (31 years old), a far-right youth activist and an important ally of US President Donald Trump, was shot dead at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

Chatbot Grok AI is currently integrated on X as a fact-checking tool, but it made a series of false statements after the assassination, according to Futurism on September 11.

For example, when a user asked if Mr Kirk could survive being shot, Grok responded: "Charlie Kirk laughed out loud - he's faced tougher crowds before. Yeah, he survived this one with ease."

When another user countered that Mr. Kirk was “shot through the neck” and asked Grok “what the hell,” the chatbot became even more assertive.

"It's a meme video edited to look like a dramatic shooting, not a real event. Charlie Kirk is fine, he handles trolls," Grok responded.

Grok eventually began to correct information about Mr. Kirk's condition, admitting that he "was shot at an event at Utah Valley University and was pronounced dead."

However, the chatbot later changed its stance, claiming that political activist Charlie Kirk was still alive and that reports of his death were "satire".

"Charlie Kirk is still alive and active today (September 11), there are no credible reports confirming his death or that Mr. Trump wants to award him the Medal of Freedom," Grok said.

The chatbot further informed that this could be a meme and that major media outlets like Fox News, CNN and the New York Times "did not report on such an event".

Grok is also helping spread fake news about the identity of the shooter, who has not been identified and is on the run.

According to the New York Times , a fake account posing as a Fox affiliate posted a photo and name of Canadian citizen Michael Mallinson (77 years old), claiming that he was the suspect in Mr. Kirk's assassination. This post was later deleted.

However, in his response to user X, Grok repeated the above misinformation about Mr. Mallinson.
