In recent days, social networks have been spreading a "secret" to cure fever in children by placing onion slices under the soles of their feet and wearing socks while sleeping. On Facebook and TikTok, many posts claim that placing onions under the feet can help reduce fever, stuffy nose or cough in children.

This method is shared by many people, calling it a simple, effective and easy-to-do "folk trick" at home.

However, according to AFP news agency, experts confirm that there is no scientific evidence to prove the effectiveness of this method.

Dr. Faisal Mohd Fadzli, a pediatrician at KPJ Tawakkal Specialist Hospital KL (Malaysia), said: "There is no research to prove that using onion on the skin can affect symptoms such as cough, cold or fever."

Dr. Faisal further explained that the mechanism of absorption of active ingredients through the skin is a complex process that cannot be achieved simply by placing a slice of onion in contact with the skin surface.

"There are more suitable, safe and effective treatments. Parents should consult a doctor before applying any folk tips or home remedies," Dr. Faisal advised.

Sharing the same view, Dr. Thurein Hlaing Win, Country Director of Hello Sayarwon (Myanmar), said: "There is no scientific mechanism to show that the compounds in onions can create a systemic treatment effect through the soles of the feet."

He warned that relying on unproven methods could expose infants and young children to dangerous complications from fever or respiratory illnesses that are not treated properly.

According to the recommendations of Mayo Clinic (USA), parents should take children under 3 months old to the doctor immediately when they show signs of fever, and older children should also go to the doctor if their body temperature is above 38°C.

"Treatment should be based on the specific cause, combining scientifically evidence-based measures such as using the correct dose of antipyretics and supportive care as directed by a doctor," Dr. Thurein emphasized.
