Recently, a woman in Malaysia shared her terrifying experience while jogging in the park, when she was bitten by an unexpected animal.

Jogging in the park, woman has a terrifying experience

According to information posted on Mothership, the incident recently happened in Sabah state in Malaysia. Accordingly, a 40-year-old woman named Mariasella Harun was severely shocked after jogging in the park on September 11.

It is known that that day, Mariasella Harun went out for her morning jog as usual at Perdana Park in Kota Kinabalu city. After running about 2km, Mariasella saw something coming out of the drain and thought it was a cat, but it turned out not to be.

"I saw something coming out of the drain and thought it was a cat. But it jumped out and bit me," Mariasella said. The woman quickly discovered that it was an otter, and what was more terrifying was that there was not just one, but a group of them. That's why the animals rushed to attack her, leaving Mariasella unable to stand up.

The woman had multiple injuries to her head, arms and legs.

The woman alone could not fight off the otters. They bit Mariasella’s head, arms and legs. The wounds began to bleed profusely. Luckily, Mariasella received help from other runners, but they were also attacked by the otters.

Mariasella was eventually taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was given antibiotics and a rabies vaccine. Mariasella said she did not know why she was attacked because she had not approached or provoked the otters.

“The doctors told me that I needed to be hospitalized for observation, but I wasn’t sure how long I would have to stay. They also told me that my wound couldn’t be stitched up right away because of the risk of complications from the bite,” Mariasella said, adding that she was still tired and in shock from the terrifying experience.

Mariasella said she jogs in the park every day and had seen the otters a week earlier. She added that she had filmed the otters but had not approached them.

Warning issued after the incident

Meanwhile, Sabah Wildlife Department Director Roland Niun said this was the first reported case of an otter attack in the state.

Mr Niun said the otters may have been attracted to the water and fish in the area, and felt threatened by humans near their cubs or dens and may attack, so people should stay away from them for safety.

People in Sabah, Malaysia have been warned to stay away from otters to avoid attacks.

Mr Niun said otters are often seen in the park in the morning and evening but usually leave the area after that. The parks are located near marshes, drains and ditches, which are natural habitats for otters, so people should be cautious if they regularly exercise there.

Following the incident, residents in Sabah state have been advised to stay away from otters to prevent similar incidents in the future.

“It is important not to interact, approach or feed these animals as they can become aggressive when they feel threatened,” Mr Niun warned.

Authorities confirmed that a nearby fence at the park was damaged and believed to be an entrance for otters. It has been repaired to prevent otters from entering the park.
