The areca palm leaf fan and the lesson of saving electricity from grandma

In modern life, when electricity becomes a necessity, my grandmother's old palm leaf fan with its cool, fresh breeze reminds me even more of the importance of using energy economically.

Cool breeze in memory

I remember my childhood days, when there was no electricity, on hot summer days, the cool breeze from the palm leaf fan in my grandmother's hand would lull me to sleep. In 1990, the village's electricity grid changed the whole appearance and lifestyle of the people. Palm leaf fans were gradually replaced by modern electric fans. My grandmother still kept the old habit, still waving the palm leaf fan in her hand. Time passed quickly, while my family's life got better and better, but she still often reminded her children and grandchildren to live well, to know how to save electricity and use electricity effectively.

On hot, humid summer days, when customers' electricity demand suddenly increases, causing power supply interruptions, my whole neighborhood is in chaos looking for a place to avoid the heat, some go to the swimming pool, others go to the street to find air-conditioned cafes... For my family, every time there is a power outage, my grandmother's old palm leaf fan is the perfect solution.

Earth Hour – Connecting love and spreading meaningful messages

With the theme “Green Shift – Green Future”, Earth Hour 2025 reminds everyone to join hands to save energy, turn off lights when not needed, use solar energy, walk instead of driving. Protect nature by planting trees, reducing plastic waste, supporting green products. Spread love through sharing knowledge, inspiring and building a green living community.

Thanh Hoa Electricity Company workers hang banners to promote Earth Hour 2025.

As someone working in the electricity industry, I often share with her about the Earth Hour event, which is held annually to promote and call on everyone to join hands to save energy, protect nature, move towards sustainable development, and reduce the harmful effects of climate change. On the evening of the Earth Hour event, she invited us to gather around the candlelight, enjoy some peanut candy, snacks, fruits, etc. She and my family members were very happy to have joined hands to do something very meaningful: "Turn off the lights - Turn on the future". She taught me and my family members how to live frugally, appreciate nature, and understand that every small action can contribute greatly to protecting the environment.

Now, although she is no longer here, it has become a habit that every time Earth Hour comes, I still light candles and tell my children about her, about the areca palm leaf fan and the lesson about saving electricity that she often taught.
